The talk of the streets and taverns has all been about the so-called death curse: a wasting disease afflicting everyone who’s ever been raised from the dead. Victims grow thinner and weaker each day, slowly but steadily sliding toward the death they once denied.
When they finally succumb, they can’t be raised—and neither can anyone else, regardless of whether they’ve ever received that miracle in the past. Temples and scholars of divine magic are at a loss to explain a curse that has affected the entire region, and possibly the entire world.
Welcome brave heroes to an adventure called Tomb of Annihilation! This is the newest adventure released by Wizards of the Coast for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. And now, you get to take part in it! Hopefully, you will survive, but if you do not... well, we'll see. Now, without further ado, let me show you the character creation guidelines.
CHARACTER CREATION: 1. All of the Races and Classes in the Player's Handbook are legal. In addition, you can choose one extra book that acts as a "+1" of sorts. You can use this book to gain access to feats, races, spells, and classes exclusive to said book. NOTE: Backgrounds are not restricted via this +1 rule. The following books can be chosen as your +1: Elemental Evil Player's Companion, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Volo's Guide to Monsters, or Xanathar's Guide to Everything (when it's released I'll allow [unless we're super far in] for you all to rebuild, this also will include the Tortle package when it's released). -- a) One restriction is that anything that grants flight (i.e. Aaracockra and Winged Tiefling) at 1st level are not allowed as flight can break many aspects of this adventure -- b) Certain variants are allowed: Variant Human, Variant Half-Elf, Human Languages, Variant Tieflings. -- c) The human languages is allowed to everyone no matter what their +1
2. You can either use the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or 27-point buy for your ability scores.
3. You can choose any background that is in any official WotC supplement, as above, this is not limited by your +1. Also note two new backgrounds from Tomb of Annihilation: the archaeologist and the anthropologist, please inform me if you would like to choose any of these two and I shall notify you of the details.
4. Please do not be evil, but if you feel like if you don't play evil in a D&D game you can't have fun then I will allow for you to be lawful evil given the restriction that you are a member of the Zhentarim or Lord's Alliance, essentially entering into a contract that you will not act in a disruptive fashion to the cause (whatever that may be). I am fine with roleplaying untrustworthiness or disagreements, but please don't actually enter PvP, refuse healing, or things like that.
5. If your character is a cleric they must worship a deity, which can be chosen from either the Deities of the Forgotten Realms or the Nonhuman Deities tables in the end of the PHB. Alternatively any +1 chosen also grants you extra deities if they are mentioned (i.e. Cat Lord). If you are a cleric you must choose a domain that is from your deity or the life domain (all deities in some way or another are affected by life [this includes deities like Kelemvor as the dead were once the living]).
6. When you begin play with your level 1 character, you have equipment from both your class and your background (use the equipment sections for both to determine what you get). You also begin play with a trinket of your choice (or you can roll a d100). If you want, you can sell any of your equipment for half of its PHB gold value or buy equipment for its PHB gold value.
7. You may pick a faction to join. Mind you, this is a completely optional choice and does not have too much effect on your play experience. To quote the Adventurer's League Players Guide v. 7: "Each faction’s goals are distinct and offer adventurers a chance to earn prestige within its ranks through the acquisition of renown by furthering the factions’s interests. Factions persist from storyline to storyline, and are woven into the fabric of the D&D Adventurers League’s narratives. Factions have their own individual goals, but aren’t overtly hostile to one another—their members might dislike members of other factions, but they’re expected to refrain from being antagonistic to one another." There are five factions, which can be viewed in closer depth in the Guide to the Factions of Faerun.
WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR: I'll be looking for four players and two alternates (if a lot of people sign up). I'm planning on starting relatively soon, but if we get everyone super quick then we can start right away. Please only join this game if you can post relatively often. What I mean by that is there should not be days going by without you posting. If you miss a day or two, that's understandable (I sometimes have things that come up), but please don't suddenly vanish, especially without messaging me. If you are going to be unavailable for some time, please message me so that I know not to wait on you / recruit an alternate.
ROLL20: After we've done a bit of minor things and truly gotten started, we'll use Roll20 as a way to show the locations of everyone, especially in a fight. It can also be used as a map to show where you guys have been before and whatnot. We'll get into that more once we actually are using it though.
DIscord Link. Use the play-by-post-toa channel to talk about this group!
BEST OF LUCK HEROES!
BTW, please post some form of your character here, that way I can look it over.
Question: I've never used Roll20 before, but I do know what it is, how hard is it to use? Would I have to invest for special headphones to use for it or would standard headphones that come with a phone work?
We'll be using Roll20 as a map, not actually as a platform to play off of. That'll just be these forums. So nothing other than internet is really needed.
Okay. I just wanted to make sure before I throw my hat into this. I'll post a link to my character sheet here then. And I'm willing to learn Roll20 you'll just have to be patient with me when we first use it.
General Background: As a Cleric of Deneir God of Writing there is nothing Craben loves more than learning and reading. He joined the Temple of Deneir at a young age in order to learn everything he possibly could. He especially loved to learn about cultures. For the past three years, Craben has been with a tribe of Lizardfolk learning their ways. While he was with them they told him stories of the land of Chult. Since learning about this land Craben has been obsessed with these people and has been looking for every opportunity to go there and learn as much as possible about the natives that live there.

"The hero sought to save the world.
"If I keep trying, I'll be able to win," the hero thought.
But the harder the hero fought, the further the world seemed to tumble away.
Drowning in doubt, the hero could not even save themselves.
Hero, if you still believe in a brighter future, hold in your heart a thorn that can pierce all doubt."
