Erik tried to open his eyes, but the world remained dark. For a split second he feared he had somehow lost his sight, but he quickly recognized the course feel of sand, and it's bitter taste in his mouth. He spat out sand from his mouth and rubbed his eyes gingerly, moving the sand towards his tear ducts.
A moment later he could see again, but a gentle breeze sent shivers down his entire body. He clutched at his sides in a reflexive gesture to try and conserve warmth. He was no stranger to cold this past year...
He looked around, shivering uncontrollably as he did so. He had no idea where he was. There was seaweed and drift wood strewn about, had he been washed ashore somehow...? His memories we're a bit fuzzy, and his thoughts kept returning to how cold he was. That had to be his top priority, as he was in no condition to do anything else. He picked himself up and headed for a Grove of palm trees he could see.
Synovar quickly accomplishes his goal of removing the sand from his hair. Unfortunately the elf quickly regrets it as the whip of his golden locks deposited a glob of salty sand in his eyes. Blindly he reaches up and removes his helmet, listening closely for the sound of the waves lapping near him. Gingerly, he makes his way back into the shallows, using the lapping tide the clear the sandy muck from his eyes.
The sea water still stinging his eyes, Synovar looks at the beach before him and whispers a prayer to Correllon for delivering him safely from Umberlee's clutches.
Erik was well on his way towards the trees when a thought struck him through the haze of shivers.
He didn't have his staff...
Another short burst of panic momentarily broke through the cold and for a second clarity returned. He looked around him, gaze focused on the beach once more in earnest. The cold from his soaking wet clothing, especially his chainmail, was returning and his hands shook as he paced back the few steps he had taken. His search took several minutes, lengthened no doubt by his damp and unfocused brain, but several feet from where he washed ashore he found what he had been searching for.
His fingers wrapped around the solid wood of his red cedar root staff and he picked it up in spite of the trembling that racked his body. With his staff in hand he began making his way back towards the treeline, pausing now and then to pick up some of the driftwood lying along his path.

"Uggghh... what? Where am I?" Merrick's jaw feels leaden and heavy, and he spits out seawater and sand. "Did I drink too much again? I feel like I've been punched by an Orc."
Making his way up on to the beach Garrick gruff, rubbing sand from his eyes and mouth. "Ships. Grr. Dwarfs don't ride on ships exactly for this reason. What's so wrong with keeping our feet on the earth, or our heads under the stone." Making his way past Merrick the dwarf looks down and helps up the halfling, "I'll take you to the mines one day Merrick, and then you'll really feel like you've been punched by an Orc. The greatest ale in all the lands. Now lad, you need some dry wood on the bottom to let her catch, and then some damp higher up to keep her burning. Come now let us grab some more wood, and set this beach ablaze to warm us." Garrick begins making his way towards the bonfire Erik started, helping out the in the gathering of fire wood and Garrick's beloved axes. Sand sticking to his beard, causing him to have a crazed look. His stone beads out of place, and his braid nearly undone.
Water and sand. This was familiar. The softness of the sand below his claws, the water lapping against his crinkled face. Snappy took a deep breath and then held it. Until he made his way to the shore he would have no need for breathing. The pull of the ocean was drawing him in, he had to get to land before it was too late. He could hold his breath for longer than most of his race, but like the others, he was a horrible swimmer. Just wasn't in the cards for Tortles.
He felt his bag, Sanja was still there in the sack, covered and protected from the elements for now. He started crawling his way up the beach and tried to get him self out of the water. He could hear voices but all he cared about right now was his survival. Maybe other needed help, but until he could gauge what was happening and how he got here, well, he wouldn't be much help to anyone.
"The rustic man swims forth, and finds shallows, finds home." He thinks to himself. Yes, he is going to have to write that one down.

It had taken a few tries tries to get the spell to work properly, his hands and lips trembling as they were, but his efforts were rewarded as green fire lept from his fingers and hungrily attacked the driftwood. Despite it's relatively damp condition, the spell didn't seem to mind. This was a trick he had perfected on the many cold nights since he had exiled himself. Fire bolt
Erik's trembling began to lessen as the heat from the fire reached him. It wasn't long before figures appeared around the fire, namely a dwarf and a halfling. Erik was startled momentarily, more by the men themselves, then by their sudden appearance. Dwarfs and Halflings were something of a rarity in his land, and he found himself intrigued by the newcomers, who immediately added more driftwood to the fire. Erik stood and gave each a short bow. "Thank you, you are both welcome around the fire. Please, come and be warm." Erik said in a polite, formal tone. He kept his voice friendly, but he tightened his grip on his staff. Life on the run had taught him many hard lessons, one of which was that you couldn't let your gaurd down.
"Thanks!", says Merrick as he takes the dwarf's hand. "God damn he's strong", thinks Merrick as he is almost lifted into the air casually by an arm as thick and hard as an iron beam. "Note to self. Do not make any arm wrestling bets with him."
He and Gerrick make their way to the fire, where a human in chain mail is tending to it. "Thanks friend, I'm Merrick and this is Gerrick! We're twins, we look alike, and our names are similar, so it's easy to get us confused. I'm the good looking and smart one, and Gerrick is the one you call on when you need a gallon of spirits finished off in under a minute. What's your name?"
"My name is Erik..." He said, a smile curving the right side of his lips. The Halfling's energy was contagious and almost as warm as the bonfire. He felt an instant liking for the pair, though he only relaxed the grip on his staff slightly.
He sat on a log near the fire and gestured for his new companions to join him.
Garrick wipes away some more of the sand and filth, "Now this is a fine fire you have started here. Thank you. Now do you happen to know where we actually are?" Garrick starts to re work his beard braid, tying the stone amulets he received from his father before his first battle back into the beard and making himself once again presentable, an old habit from military days. "Come Merrick have a seat, only thing we're missing at the moment is some more ale, aye?"
"Erik, Merrick, and Gerrik! Haha! From our names, we were meant to be a team! I can already tell this is going to be great. We can form a band. I'll play the bagpipes, Gerrick can put on a skirt and dance, and Erik can... um.. sing? Play drums? Something, I'm sure. We'll be famous! Legends throughout the land, drenched in women, surrounded by gold, and lavished with wine. Or is it the other way around?"
Merrick sees a waterlogged elf by the shore, and hollers at him. "You over there! Come here! Our first audience. Meet the merry band. We are the 'Errick Brothers, already world famous. At least island famous. Come by our fire and warm yourself up. You're just in time for our first performance!"
"Dance?!?! I can't dance. I have been told I'm a pretty good singer, when a bit o ale is involved. I know me some Dwarven songs, I can try to translate them if we must." The Dwarf didn't know how to dance, never found the need for it. The only dance he was accustomed to was that of the blade, there was never anything as exhilarating to him as that of battle.
"Thank you, Sir Garrick. I am afraid I am not familiar with this island..." Erik confesses to Garrick and Stokes the fire some. The Halfling's enthusiasm seemed to have no end and it made Erik smile.
"Well master Merrick, I am fairly handy with a lute if we ever found one."

Splashing his way out of the water Snappy realized where he needs to go, that warm fire down the beach. He shook in his shell for a moment and let the water roll off his thick skin. Were they passengers on the ship as well?
He walks up and pulls Sanja from his sack, to make sure she was still dry and still oiled up. He plucks the strings and drags his claws down her back. Everything seemed to be in order so next, he pulled out his pixie hair bow and made sure it wasn't broken like the pieces of wood that were floating all around him just moments ago. With every string in place, Snappy smiles large.
"What would I do without you, Sanja? Sadness, complete loneliness, sorrow." He says as he places Sonja lovingly on his shoulder, resting his chin on his chest so he can hear her beautiful notes as he waved the bow across her strings.

He slowly strolls up the beach, playing a soft and slow melody. Working his way to the campfire, on guard in case these folk around it weren't too friendly. As the song goes on, he raises the tempo and starts playing faster. He wasn't playing to impress, he was playing because he was grateful to be alive. This was his life's song.

Hearing a pithy tune coming from the beach inspired a Dwarven song rise from the bottom of Garrick's heart.
"Dwarven women, are beautiful lovers Dwarven women, they understand I've been around some, and I have discovered That dwarven women know just how to please a man.
So baby don't you worry about growin' whiskers Those elven girls ain't got nothin' on you Cause it takes some whiskey, to get 'em frisky And frisky dwarves may just be the ones to teach 'em a thing or two.
Everybody seems to love those human women Buck eighteen on up to twenty-five Well I love 'em too, but I'm tellin' you Dwarves know to really love, and boy it sure is fine
So baby don't you worry about growin' whiskers Those elven girls ain't got nothin' on you Cause it takes some whiskey, to get 'em frisky And frisky dwarves may just be the ones to teach 'em a thing or two."
Eyes closed, and feeling the song come to life as he remembered back to days of drinking in the mountains with clanmates. A smile coming to his mouth, and a tear to his eye.
Snappy keeps playing as he gets closer and starts playing the tune to the words of the dwarven song. This moment was rare; when two creatures meet with a song. He will remember this moment until he has no more thoughts to give the world.
After the song is done Snappy will pull his fiddle from his shoulder and bow to the dwarven fellow. (Tortle bows differ from other races, they sink into their shells and stretch their arms out. It could be disconcerting, but it is a sign of respect for a tortle to lower its neck to a stranger.)
He decided that this creature was alright, so maybe the others were as well. Maybe they knew why they were here.
"Hello, and very well met. I have never had such a rare meeting, to greet each other with a song is a custom that all the world should share, they'd be much happier, I reckon. I am Snappy A'Oinx. Me friends call me Snap and me ladies...well, they never call me again." He says with a nervous laugh. Humor, right behind music, of course, is the best medicine.
"May I join this fire, I am cold from..." he trails off, looking towards the beach. "Does anyone remember what happened?"

Erik felt his spirits lift from the group gathering together in song and for the first time in more then a year he missed the times he had spent playing music in the comforts of his home. Erik joined in the song, doing his best to accompany the others, using his staff as a makeshift drumstick upon the log on which he sat. He added his voice to the others, tho he was woefully out of practice, but he did his best.
Erik sighed contentedly as the merry band concluded it's impromptu session, but immediately he missed home and the family he had left behind. He had little to sing about for a good long while. This shipwreck, it would seem, was about to drastically change his life. He hoped it was for the better.
He rose as a new creature entered their campire, and from his instrument, Erik assumed this had been the musician from afar. "Well met indeed master Snap..." Erik said with a polite bow. "By all means please join us...this campfire is for all those weary and soaked. But alas I am afraid I remember little between going to sleep on the boat and waking up here..."
