Heros: Quinn Hightower - Half-Elf Rogue Glanos Mistbeard - Dwarf Cleric Karin Swiftmoon - Elf Druid Taeryn Thorne - Human Fighter Chapter 1: Breakfast at Durnans South of Neverwinter, and two weeks journey on the high road along the Sword Coast, lies Waterdeep. It is here, on a midsummer's morning, that we find our small band of adventurers in the City of Splendors. ---------
Over priced flaccid boiled cabbage and burnt blood sausage, most of the inn’s patrons awake and sober this early in the morning just poked at the contents of their plate with utter disgust. Durnan the innkeeper was proudly calling it the Yawning Portal special, but it was more like last week's rejected leftovers. His inn was legendary, no thanks to breakfast, providing the only known entrance into the Undermountan. A vast and ancient dwarven ruins of untold riches and peril, the depth from which few returned.
However, it wasn’t business with the Undermountain that brought everyone to the table this morning. The Yawning Portal was one of the better known watering holes of Waterdeep for intrepid adventurers and enterprising souls alike to pick up jobs, get a lead, or just kick back and relax. Sadly, cabbage would prove to be the least of your concerns this morning, as the greatest task before you would be to survive breakfast.
But we are getting ahead of ourselves. At this very moment, only Fate herself knew of the impending doom ascending upon the Yawning Portal. The patrons of Durnan on the other hand, which includes our hapless party, still have a few moments of serene disgust contemplating the cosmic question of cabbage before breakfast would hit the fan.
[OOC] Role initiative. Quinn, Karin, and Taeryn all happen to be sitting at the same table.
Taeryn poked at his breakfast idly, wrinkling his nose at the odor of the foul-smelling cabbage before him. The sausage looked slightly more edible, but only slightly.
He sighed to himself, sinking back into his chair and scanning the patrons of the inn. It wouldn't be long before he would be out of coin, and what little he had left barely afforded him this breakfast.
Who here looks like they can't hit the broad side of a barn with a crossbow? Taeryn thought as he glanced about the room looking for his next mark.
He needed money, and fast. Surely there was someone at the inn looking to prowl the depths of the dungeons beneath the Yawning Portal. Someone in need of a strong sword-arm. Someone who would ask very little questions, let him kill whatever creatures needed killing, and let him get back on the road to wander to the next town and repeat the process.
Or die trying, he thought with half-hearted joy, for what else was left to him but a good death? He had been robbed of his last one.
OOC: Initiative - 1d20 = 1 + 2 = 3.... real life dice rolls for the win.
Trying not to inhale too deeply, Karin Swiftmoon brought a small forkful of boiled cabbage to her mouth with the utmost hesitancy. She tired to think of the fresh wild cabbage that she had harvested in the deep woods on occasion, with its slight hint of sweetness and satisfying crunch. This thought lingered in her mind for a moment and she began to remember her simple life in the forest before she decided to embark on the path of an adventurer. Her journey's purpose that brought her here to the Yawning Portal was clear in her mind, so she tried not to get lost in the nostalgia of memories from home. Chewing slowly, she was suddenly overwhelmed with the foul taste of the cabbage which mimicked it's scent. She quietly tried to suppress a gag and let out a slight cough, but managed to eventually force it down. What I wouldn't give to be wandering the forest once more, foraging for fresh mushrooms and berries, she thought to herself.
Setting her fork down lightly on her plate, she decided to take a glance around the room. While she was adept at analyzing creatures of the forest as a druid, such as animals and plants, her social skills with humanoid creatures were lacking. How was she going to get access to the knowledge she was seeking? Perhaps the answers would magically present themselves to her, but she knew this was unlikely. She was aware of the hard work it took to gain knowledge in a particular subject, it took her years to become proficient in the Draconic and Sylvan languages. No, she would need to do some searching to find the information she needed. And the sooner I do that the sooner I can return to my home in the forest. She carefully scanned the common room of the inn once more, hoping to catch the glance of someone who may be able to help her.
The cleric cautiously took a bite of breakfast as he surveyed his surroundings. The soggy cabbage reminding him of his grandma. He was sitting alone at a large wooden table, worn smooth by countless patrons. The tavern ruckus was a bit muted and there was no musician this early in the morning but surprisingly most of the tables had two or three patrons at them. The exception being those tables closest the shaft. His table was near a gaping hole clearly the namesake of the inn.
He had overheard someone say the opening was over 40 feet wide and the shaft well over 100 feet deep. The masonry that encircled the opening comprised of monolithic rough hewn foundation stones rising up above the floor to about tabletop height. The light grey stone of the outcropping contrasted sharply with the warm browns of the floorboards.
Gazing up from the ground floor, motes of morning light filtered down from several stories up, through the lingering smoke of the cook fires. Stairs at the edge of the room wind up the sides of the tavern, leading to lodging on the upper floors, surrounding the space of the tavern. Where there wasn’t a banister or hung tapestry, the walls boasted countless busts of both normal and strange creatures, such as bear, dire wolf, giant spiders and what the cleric could only guess was a werewolf.
Suddenly, a high pitch scream shatters the sleepy tavern, dishes crashing to the floor as a waitress runs from the room. Panning around from where the waitress disappeared through a door the cleric quickly sees what had alarmed her so badly. Five large spiders had crawled out from the shaft. Three were nearly upon his table and two even bigger spiders had just crested out of the shaft. The clerics chair clattered across the floor as he jumped to his feet, quarterstaff ready in hand.
[OOC] The three spiders took their whole first turn closing the distance from the shaft to the cleric. The two giant spiders spent their first turn cresting the shaft. Quinn gets first move.
Quinn didn't think there could be anything more disgusting than the reeking cabbage in front of him. He was very wrong. Turning his head towards the scream and viewing the giant insects that had crested the shaft caused him to instinctively draw his clockwork pistol, aim, and fire at the nearest monstrosity, all while still sitting and looking as though he would continue eating throughout the horrific ordeal. Although appearing calm on the outside, Quinn noticed out of the corner of his eye that he had crushed the tin mug he had been holding in his clockwork right hand.
So much for my morning ale...
OOC: d20 to hit = 9 + 5 = 14. If that is enough to hit I rolled 2 for dmg, + 3 = 5 dmg total. I am shooting the spider parallel to me.
OOC: Hey Quinn good post, teeny tiny issue, I need you to make a second attack role. Spider#3 is roughly 35-40 feet from you and Crossbow, Hand has a normal range of 30. You are at disadvantage for the attack role.
The first three arachnids were the size of house cats. They would have been somewhat intimidating on their own, but the two larger spiders at the edge of the portal were the size of beer kegs. Quin's small crossbow was deceptively quiet in its release, the deadly shot hitting its mark with a bit of grandiose. One of the "smaller" spiders skittering across the floor exploded into a shower of viscera. The spiders dramatic demise did not seem to phase its compatriots rushing towards the cleric.
A spider that had reached the cleric lunged for his leg, but the cleric was fast, easily dodging the attack and following up with a vicious kick. His armored boot smashed through its thick chitin, the remnants of the spider collapsing into a convulsing heap of legs and goo. One of the bigger spiders suddenly adjusted its course and started heading towards Quinn. A second spider undeterred by his pulverized broodmates ducked in for a bite at the clerics other leg but was quickly deflected by the cleric's staff. The remaining giant spider scrambled wide around the cleric trying to flank him. But the time it took the spider to take this more cautionary route bought the cleric a few precious moments...
OOC: Quinn attacked spider#3 with disadvantage due to range. Rolled 1d20 = 14 and 1d20 =15, took lowest(14) and kill hit! Cleric unarmed attack 1d20 = 10+6 spider#2 kill hit! Giant Wolf Spider#2 is heading for Quinn. Giant Wolf Spider#1 did a double move action, took a wide birth around and has flanked the cleric.
Karin quickly stood from the table, cut a small piece of blood sausage, and side-stepped to get a clear view of the giant spider. This menacing beast surely had a taste for blood sausage, she assumed. While holding out her hand, the greasy morsel of sausage centered within her palm, she began to utter sharp clicking sounds with the hope of catching the spider's attention.
OOC: I want to move 3 squares southward and then 3 more squares westward on the map so I'm next to Taeryn. I'm going to cast Animal Friendship on giant spider # 1. It must succeed a wisdom saving throw, my spell DC is 12, or it will be charmed!

Taeryn reached for his greatsword the moment he witnessed the creatures emerge from the shaft in the middle of the common room.
He watched as one spider exploded, announced by a loud bang emanating from a mechanical device that one of the patrons at his table was pointing in the beast’s direction.
A moment later, Taeryn’s attention was drawn to a strange clicking noise emanating from another patron, as she directed her attention towards one of the larger spiders.
The hissing and clicking noise that answered in return was more than enough reason to rush the beast. He had fought their kind before, and knew what they were capable of.
Closing the distance between himself and the large spider directly ahead of him, Taeryn swung his metal blade in a strong, overhead slash...
OOC: Moving to the giant spider flanking the cleric and attacking.
The fowl sounds were cut short as Taeryn's sword in a devastating arc cleaved into the spider. Eight massive legs splayed out from the lifeless body, putrid ichor hemorrhaging from the massive cleft.
Quinn saw the approaching spider and quickly leapt up onto the table attempting to tumble across to the other side. With the table between them, he knew he could get off another shot with his clockwork pistol.
OOC: Rolling over to K's side. Acrobatics check: 3 + 5 is 8.... not sure what I'm rolling against so I guess regardless I will still try to shoot the spider at the end. Attack roll: 3 + 5 is 8 as well... dmg is 2 + 3 is 5 in case I hit.
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Quinn As if it was a fixture of the mountain itself, the massive table didn't even budge as Quinn unceremoniously threw himself over it. In a continuous fluid motion Quinn brought his gun up just as he touched down on the far side of the table and fired without hesitation. The shot missed, as it had been too high. Though the size of a keg, the mass of the spider hung low to the ground. If it had been a human, Quinn probably would have hit the head or chest.
The approaching brute quickly climbed up on the table with sickening ease where the trajectory of Quinn’s bullet had flown just moments before. From its table top vantage the monster seemed to defy gravity, snapping out at Quinn’s neck. However, without the aid of its web to precisely triangulate prey the spider missed Quinn, having misjudged the distance. The spider quivered in furry, agitating its fangs against each other, hissing and clicking as the other one had done.
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Quinn
OOC: Oops, I see I forgot Quinn has a pistol, I will redact my “crossbow” verbiage from earlier posts. ;) To do a basic vault or side roll over these tables is just difficult terrain so double movement cost. If you want to true circus tumble across the table I might do an athletic check. I’m just going to rp you made it across the table. Spiders ignore difficult terrain penalties.
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Cleric The cleric barely had time to register the giant spider flanking him before the mystery swordsman had split it in two. He let out a small breath in relief but it was short lived as the smaller spider taking advantage of the distraction darted in and sank its fangs deep into the clerics calf. A small growl of pain escaped through his clenched teeth as the cleric brought his quarter staff down through the spider as if planting a flag. The staff made a loud thud as it skewered the creature and slammed into the floor.
With slight frustration that she had been unable to tame the giant spider, Karin slowly lowered her hand and tossed aside the piece of blood sausage. She gave a quick nod to the fellow with a great sword who had just essentially annihilated the spider, it's eight legs sprawled out in every direction and what was left of its body slowly draining with ichor. Although it was unfortunate to see living creatures die, spiders had never been her favorite to encounter.
Almost as quickly as the thought left her mind, Karin noticed another patron of the inn leap over the table in her direction. Another giant spider had crawled up onto the table to her right and she quickly reached for her longsword...
OOC: Longsword attack to giant spider on table - 1d20(1) + 2 = 3... total bummer!
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Karin Karin stepped abreast of the gentleman, swinging her broad sword at the spider. As the blade came down the giant spider shifted to the side with uncanny speed, her blade only managing to liberate some large splinters from the table surface.
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Karin
OOC: Karin > Giant Wolf Spider Attack Role: 1d20(1) + 2 = 3 !!! MISS !!!
The crunch of the spider's chitin being split open by his massive blade was all too satisfying for the human fighter. He had grown accustomed to hunting monsters of the wild for days on end, and it had been too long since his last battle. Taeryn wasn't sure if he should be concerned, or ignore the bubbling rage that seemed to be brewing just below the surface of his usually well-maintained emotions.
Growling under his breath, he spun around, reaching instinctively for the dagger at his waist. The blood began to rush in his ears.
He caught sight of the remaining six-legged creature on the tabletop a short distance away. It clacked menacingly at two of the inn's patrons -- the man with the strange weapon, and the woman with white hair who had moments before attempted to ensnare one of the creatures with a spell.
Surging forward, Taeryn charged the table. The sound of steel being bared and a flash of silver announced the release of his dagger as it whirled menacingly through the air, aimed at his prey.
Taeryn didn't wait to see whether the dagger connected with it's intended target, but instead leapt onto the table. Gripping his greatsword in two hands, he shouted, "Now! Finish it, while I have it's attention!"
OOC: Moving to close the distance so I don't suffer penalties on the dagger throw, then throwing my dagger at the spider. Using the rest of my move to leap onto the table adjacent to the spider to provide advantage and sneak attack for Quinn.
Attack roll: 1d20(2) + 4 = 6! I'm beginning to think we are cursed...
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Taeryn The dagger hurdled end over end, in the smoky air a pulsating shimmer of steel as it spun through beams of morning sunlight shining down from far above. Sadly, the blade passed just beneath the spiders body and vanished in a clatter on the other side of the table.
Quinn didn't need to be told twice as the the man flanking the spider shouted in his direction. With a flourish, he threw back his coat, drew the rapier sheathed at his hip and jumped onto the table behind the monstrosity, while thrusting forward all in one fluid motion.
OOC: attack roll, 4, advantage roll, 18 + 5 is 23! Dmg roll 4 + 3 is 7 + sneak attack dmg 3 is 10 total!
Yawning Portal - Round 04 - Turn Quinn The hissing and clicking abruptly stopped, a violent shutter going through the spider before it collapsed to the table top. Quinn had managed to find a weak spot in the chitinous armor plunging his rapier all the way to the hilt with little resistance. The corpse twitched and spasmed as Quinn drew out his sword.
OOC: Nice rolls Quinn, end of combat, everyone is free to act. The cleric is slowing limping towards you guys using his staff as a walking stick. There is a genuine smile of victory on his face, but you can see a slight wince when he puts weight on the leg that was bit.

Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Taeryn
The dagger hurdled end over end, in the smoky air a pulsating shimmer of steel as it spun through beams of morning sunlight shining down from far above. Sadly, the blade passed just beneath the spiders body and vanished in a clatter on the other side of the table.
Yawning Portal - Round 03 - Turn Taeryn
Quinn didn't need to be told twice as the the man flanking the spider shouted in his direction. With a flourish, he threw back his coat, drew the rapier sheathed at his hip and jumped onto the table behind the monstrosity, while thrusting forward all in one fluid motion.
OOC: attack roll, 4, advantage roll, 18 + 5 is 23! Dmg roll 4 + 3 is 7 + sneak attack dmg 3 is 10 total!
Yawning Portal - Round 04 - Turn Quinn
The hissing and clicking abruptly stopped, a violent shutter going through the spider before it collapsed to the table top.
