Artin walks up to the group of three people in white scarves. "Hi there! You must have gotten a note too. I'm Merrick, Merrick Meadowgrain. Nice to meet you all!" Merrick sticks out an enthusiastic hand to the three adventurers. They all start making their way down the road, and Merrick hurries to keep up. He doesn't mind, he's used to traveling with tallfolk. Just have to keep a slightly faster pace is all. Turning to the dwarf, he asks. "What's that eye on your shield? It looks like some sort of holy symbol. Are you a holy man? My brother is. He's always doing this neat stuff with spirits and whathave you. To be honest, I never understood it. But hey to each his own, right? I'm pretty open minded. Holy, not holy. Well, maybe not evil. I once met a crazy old man, he wanted to drink blood and sacrifice virigins to his god. Is that holy? I hope you're not like that. But you don't seem like you are. You seem pretty nice. So what's that symbol?"
After listening to Merrick's tirade on the quiet dwarf, Louis responds...
"Somewhere in there, I'll assume that you, too, agree with taking the shor- ... ummm, more direct path. The five mile path it is. Let's go... We're in a rush."
Louis continues down the shorter path with his new peers.
After a bit, he wonders aloud....
"Part of me thinks we should have checked that sign to be sure no one is playing tricks."

Merrick notices the human interjecting. "Oh right, a direction! Hmm, well let me see if there's anything I can spot. I can spot things pretty well you know. I spotted a giant owl once, it was hidden in the trees. Really hard to see! I was proud of myself seeing it. Of course, would have been good to see the goblin camp too. I didn't see that. Well you can't get them all. Hey, are you a holy man too? You've got that air about you. Really serious looking. You're pretty serious right? But are you holy? Are you two part of the same holy group?"
Merrick looks to see if there's anything different about one path over the other.

Ragnor smiles slightly before looking at Merrick and responding, "It is the symbol of my god, Helm, the god of protection. I do not claim to be holy, but I try to get as close to it as I can. But for future reference, if anyone drinks blood and sacrifices anyone, they are probably not nice people." Ragnor takes the shield off of his back and shows the symbol off more properly, "This symbol represents my oath to protect those that cannot help themselves."
You travel a ways down the shorter path to Brogg (sounded like you were headed that way) when Louis slows the party. Something caught his attention. Something is just not right. After a moment you realize what it is. Louis and Ragnor turn to each other and nod. The birds have stopped singing. The forest has grown quiet.
Up ahead the road curves to the right. there are large trees along the road with fields just beyond them to the left. The forest is growing dense along the right. The early summer sun is still bright and casting deep shadows across the way ahead.

Louis looks down at Merrick, arching an eyebrow...
"You're going to be cheerful this entire trip, aren't you? ... Unfortunately, we're too far down already - doubling back will mean being late. I say we push forward, as quietly as we can but stay closer to the side of the roads with the fields.... Can any of you produce a minor illusion that we could perhaps cast in front of us as bait for whatever scared off the birds?"
Would Louis have any idea of what might be stalking the woods in this area, be it beast or humanoid? History/Nature 22 Stealth Check (@ disadvantage): 20 Well those were less than optimal rolls.... lol
The dirt is rough and red. Redder than you thought dirt could be, but it is well known that the dirt is red to the south beyond its start in the Blood Hills to the west.
The road looks travelled. It is neither abandoned nor is it a common thoroughfare. Small weeds grow here and there in the path. Heavy wheel ruts in path are likely from the logging and mine shipments back to the refining centers and mills up north.
"choices to be made friends, we think there is something out there that has scared off the animals so do we stay on the path and keep our eyes open, go through the trees to the left and walk through the fields far enough away from the woods to see anything coming or my personal favorite of sneaking into the wood and trying to sneak up in whatever is out there. If you think your armour will make you too noisy, Merrick and I can go ahead, if you don't mind of course, you look capable of moving without being seen".
An excited gleam is in Kaemar's eye, an observant person would probably think that she was hoping for trouble rather than avoiding it.
"Generally speaking, I doubt Ragnor or I will ever be particularly good at sneaking. So if you and Merrick want to sneak ahead, as us two follow at a distance, say of thirty feet, that might not be a bad idea... With that said, I don't think you should cut through the forest as there'd be no way for us to keep track of you and thus get to you if help is needed. Perhaps you can use the trees and growth for cover a foot or two into the treeline instead?"
By looking at the wheel ruts can we tell how recently this path has been used? (Perception/Survival 8 , subtract 1 if investigation.)
The ruts are deep from long years of heavy use. The dirt on the surface of the ruts is tamped down. It looks as though the road has been used in the last few weeks but you can't tell more precisely than that.
"Seems like this road hasn't been used in a few weeks, so let's be on guard, but we should push forward. Kaemar, if you and Merrick are going to scout ahead, keep at a distance that Ragnor and I can get to you if need be. Keep your eyes open - I doubt we're alone out here."
Louis stands there waiting for a cue from the two stealthier party members to begin moving forward.
// Louis will just keep the Stealth roll (7) from earlier as we hadn't actually started moving since I rolled it.//

Presuming that Merrick is going within plan, Kaemar moves off the track and into the trees about 10' keeping low and trying to keep her head down. Her hand reaches down briefly to the pouch at her waist where her orb rests, ready to be used as a focal point to her spells. The daggers in her boot tops and the short sword belted at her waist are all loosened in the scabbards ready if needed.
Before she goes too far she says, "I can cast a spell to let you hear me, you can reply if you need to, just whisper and I will hear."message

Vhon - Level 2 Warlock - What shall become of the Drunken Sailor?
Moving through the bushes stealthily after a hundred yards you start to hear voices. Sneaking closer you see 5 bandits set lounging on either side of the road waiting to ambush any passersby with a 6th out in the woods as a lookout. The 6th does not see you though you are 20 feet away on the other side of the road. The other 5 bandits are another 40 feet further away.
Merrick slowly draws his bow, as silently as an owl in flight. He makes eye contact with the other members of his party, to make sure they have seen the bandits too.
"Do you and Merrick believe that you can take out the scout without alerting the others? Maybe some magical sleep or any tricks you may have up your sleeve. If you can do that, I have a plan that may help us get the drop on these bandits"
