Pardon if I am dropping this in the wrong place. With Mordenkainen's tome of foes, they introduced other tiefling variants who are descendants of the Lords of the Nine, the archdevils. As far as the physical characteristics, do they still by default have the physical characteristics from the PHB (horns and tails) or are players a little bit more "free" to pick their characteristics. Now, I know that it's mostly hand waveable either way, but I am curious as to whether or not there's an official ruling on it that I haven't found.
Thanks!

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
You might wanna check out Sword Coast Adventurer's guide, there is a section on changing how your Tiefling looks. If you look through them, you can really make your Tiefling from MToF feel more related to their heritage.
Yes but I was unsure if that description only applies to the SCAG variant Tieflings or if it applies to the new MToF archdevil Tieflings as well.

While SCAG is speaking of the Forgotten Realms Tieflings, and so may differ from those of other settings, it explicitly states that these variant rules are there to express Tieflings not descended from Asmodeus.
We do have rules from MToF for roughly the same thing, but they exist simultaneously, one does not supersede the other. Additionally, MToF didn't provide similar means of varying Tiefling appearances, so I would say that SCAG stands unopposed on that front.
Awesome, thanks. Horns and a tail are a non-starter for me. The other stuff, not so much.

For what it's worth, if I was creating a Tiefling I would be using MToF variant rules to make a non-Asmodeus Tiefling with SCAG to give him or her a variant appearance.
I honestly think anything is basically cool. My brother made a Tiefling monk with a bunch of small horns on his head... He made Darth Maul, it was pretty great.

If you find SCAG's options of interest, use them.
