I'm just annoyed that I had all the source books you could ever want and now cannot seem to find them AT ALL. My sense of frugality is at war with my desire to visit Krynn. :D
I am right there with you. I had a box of my most prized possessions that moved with me everywhere through college and beyond. Missing said box, even though I am quite certain it is at or was at a relatives house, it kills me to know that my Dragonlance modules, Original Basic and expert boxed sets, all the 1980's AD&D books, Star Frontiers, Mechwarrior and resources are all somewhere...If I had a ring of wishes, one of my wishes might be wasted on having that box returned...
I think they are all being absorbed into an other-dimensional portal to my bookshelf. My youngest daughter seems to enjoy the DL modules (well the pullouts any way) and I have to put them back together and on the shelf with regularity. The Basic, Expert, Companion, Master and Immortal sets have fallen into disrepair, but are still usable in a pinch.

I am giving a hard look to the digital downloads available on Drive-Thru RPG. I figure I could have what I needed printed out and that any conversion shouldn't (famous last words) be that difficult.
IME, 4e stuff translates almost directly into 5e with very little trouble, especially if you've played some star wars saga edition. I know, that sounds weird, but trust me.
Sadly, not much DL stuff got translated into 4e.
I hear 2e stuff translates pretty easily, aside from assumptions about how deadly the game should be, and some stuff where older eds "punish" choices with mechanical consequences, restrictions, etc. But in terms of monsters and magic items, it should be easy.
That all said, a decent amount of mechanical stuff was translated into 4e, like draconians, a lot of monsters, etc. in case anything proves difficult and you need a second POV on an option while rebuilding it in 5e.
Either way, conversion to 5e tends to be easy, because 5e is pretty simple and transparent.
we should have a conversions subforum here, with guides, advice threads, etc.
This thread speaks to me. I would adore a campaign setting book that could attempt to set the stage in a time of relative peace away from the main story's set in the novels and previous campaigns. I don't think it would have to be a huge PHB book, but maybe something about the size of the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide that can flavor things a little and help set up that open world that you can make your own. I wanted to try and find a time of relative peace inbetween or otherwise away from the main storylines. The best I had come up with was some time after Huma, but before the full rise to power of Ishtar. This was to try and keep us away from meeting any of the famous campaign characters or otherwise avoid what I always have people grumbling to me about when it comes to Dragonlance (having to follow The War of the Lance).
I suppose in the end it wouldn't be a monumental effort to convert what you want up to 5E, but a helping hand could be nice :)
Taladas, I miss Taladas. Unfortunately, most of the Dragonlance advocates I've known were "meh" on Taladas because it did not have a spotlight in the original novels. I think Estwilde has a great suggestion on the "smaller hardbound". Give Krynn, Oerth, Eberron, and Mystara a treatment if at all possible. Kender, Scarlet Brotherhood, Warforged, and air ships, that would be fun.
My exposure to Taladas was exclusively through the comics. The nineties was a different time. :D No internet to speak of so I had no idea there was sourcebooks for other continents on Krynn until it was too late.
I would like to think that there would be archives of all the sourcebooks somewhere in WotC, would it be too much to ask for some digital copies? I'll convert it myself. Maybe even post it on the homebrew section here on D&D beyond.
Technically I'd think it fairly straightforward, I have no idea if there would be any copyright or legal issues involved. Seeing references all over the 5e source materials makes me think that maybe publishers are just waiting for the right sign?
PLEASE REPRINT OR GIVE US DIGITAL COPIES OF THE DRAGONLANCE SOURCEBOOKS.
I prefer to set my Dragonlance gaming post War of the Lance. I like the Knights of Takhisis (before they become the Knights of Neraka), so I like to use the alternative War of the Darklance timeline in the the Legends sourcebook from 3.5.
I'd love a reboot, and I think the best time they can place a new 5e setting would be directly after the short story where Tanis meets Steele. It allows the Dark Knights to be a faction in the setting, and I see no reason why Wizards can't just declare the Novels from Summer Flame on non-canon.

I really, really really really, hate retcons like that.
Here is my thing. You can have a Dragonlance that calls back to that Legends era, without declaring anything non canon. In fact, you can have a setting that feels like the first books, but without the already established Big Damn Heroes and already told story, and with the newer elements that worked, like the Knights of Takhisis, included.
Land bonus, the last hundred years were brutal, but things [can be] relatively stable for the last little bit, until the new dragon army showed up, those not on a dragon's back sailing in aboard great ships. First we thought the Minotaurs were simply restless, and looking for new trade and raiding opportunities. But soon, more of them showed up, as well as others, in the trade ports of Ansalon, warning of a dread darkness rising from unknown lands.
Even as our scholars scrambled to discover where these rumored warships could be coming from, and how terrible they must be to drive the mighty Minotaur before them, even more terrifying news reached us. [whatever. The Dragon Armies have Dragons no one has ever seen before, or they are flying banners of Takhisis, even though the Knights of Takhisis insist that she is dead, or they fly the banner of old Ishtar! Some fresh terror that calls back to old threats]
the world has been at peace for over a decade, the Knights of Takhisis are dedicated to ideals represented by their taking back their old name, and are in decline, Solamnia has a peaceful ruler, but many believe it has become corrupt, the elves are thriving, Thorbardin is open to trade, the Kender have rebuilt their old home, and Solace has regrown its great trees with the help of the Elves. life isn't perfect, but it's better than it's been in a long time. Many predict an imminent Golden Age!
But a new storm is coming, and as new evil rises, so too must new heroes, and as dragons threaten the shores of Ansalon, someone must seek out the old lore, and reforge The Dragonlance!
I'd play the crap out of that. It calls back to the War of The Lance, and to the Legends Era, it puts the WoTL in a similar frame as the Cataclysm, puts the old novel heroes as legends to aspire to, and puts a little time between the newest novels and the present. And heals the things people don't like about the later DL books. All without a reboot.
I'd also find ways to incorporate the Draconians, Idra(Irda?), half-ogres, etc in ways that encourage new players to think about them and possibly use them.
I think it would be great if the threat from afar was a Good threat, perhaps the Ishtar thing, with Solamnia torn between the invaders goal of a golden age of good, and respecting the balance, and the consequences of Ishtar of old, and defending their neighbors, and the Knights of Takhisis taking the role the Knights of Solamnia had in the Chronicles, and Noble Draconians in the invading army, with OG Draconians and other "monster" races in the surprise role of defenders of Ansalon's freedom. Family but also new, would be the idea.
I didn't mean to disparage anyone that liked the post 'Dragons' age, I just enjoyed the the earlier times for a bit, and I would love to hope that if a smaller hardback campaign book did come out, that there'd be room for both of those if the person chooses to use it. I was just trying to figure out a way to plug something into and inbetween the main story arcs like BricingWolf was talking about.
I wouldn't be trying to retcon or just say that nothing of those happened. My idea was to just stretch the years a bit in a few areas of relative peace, like directly after Huma banishes Takhisis, and before the rise of the full power of Ishtar. And because of the recent fight against Takhisis and minions, the Towers of High Sorcery have yet to completely lock down magic and fully regulate it as strictly, allowing magic class players (and the DM) a little more breathing room to let them live and play in the world but also giving the DM a story hook of the Conclave wanting to bring them back into the fold, or something of the sort.
But yeah, mostly just trying to create a time for Krynn where it's relatively boring (novel wise), to plug people in and run without that problem of the overarching WotL that everyone bristles at :)
On the other end of it though, I'm very much looking forward to seeing what comes (if anything) of this possible movie that looks to have been shopped around.

I'd play in that game. Most of my issues with post War-of-Souls Krynn are minor in that they introduce some newer game options I'm not fond of (I have a dislike of all charisma based spell-casting classes), but they're not deal breakers for me. I understand other people like that stuff and I've got to let them have fun too. The main problem I have is the death of Paladine and Takhisis. I just don't think the remaining pantheon have enough heft to make a decent pantheon to represent Krynn.
Dragonlance has gotten stale, in my opinion, because of the changes the setting has gone through. There isn't really a canon time-line in which players can really explore all the great things about the setting without bumping into these events. I can understand a dislike of reboots and retcons, but it just seems that there gets to be a point where the sheer weight of canon drags down on world and makes it difficult to truly grow. I think it happened to my other favorite childhood fandom (Star Trek), and I think it happened to Dragonlance. I'd LOVE a reboot.

ID love a post Huma supplement, or chapter in a suppliment. Heck yes.

See, all of that is WHY I want what I suggested. Because the time passes, and that weight of canon becomes the same as the Cataclysm. History that informs the nature of the world, but the details don't really matter anymore. 90% of the thing would describe the current world.
But I also agree about the gods. THen again, good writing could fix that.
I would say that i would be a fan of it either way, presenting 5e versions of the original war of the lance stuff would be fine, but if they want to continue the story from post War of Souls, that would be fine too- I really enjoyed that plot line, Mina, and the way Gods felt in that era as well. Post Dragons of a Summer Flame would be ok as well, really, i think all of these states have things to recommend them. It also depends on what story the designers want to tell when they make it, if we get it out of that goodman games old module thing, then classic Dragonlance would be good, but I feel like the original War of the Lance stuff is too similar to tyranny of dragons for WOTC to bother (honestly... the core books bring up enough DL that i'm surprised they didn't just make krynn the default setting of 5e and do TOD as a War of lance reboot, but whatever)- at that point I would rather something new or an adaption of War of Souls as a hardback adventure.
I haven't heard these rumors...but I don't know if that makes sense. Dragonlance, while fun, is too far away from mainstream gaming IMHO for them to even consider making the movie based in that world. There is no support for it and a lot of people would be confused. My gaming group has 4-7 players depending on our schedules and only 2 of us have played Dragonlance. And only one of us has an interest in playing it again. (Spoiler, it ain't me.) I liked Dragonlance, the concept and the world were great...it's just TOO much fantasy for me. And for most gamers I know. Kender, though...lol My favorite character from a Dragonlance game was this Kender I played... I played him so well I had to retire him because he was driving our gaming group crazy. Even my DM said he never saw a Kender played so well. And tbh, he was a great DM for letting me play him that way. He even made a roll chart for the different locations and towns we went into just to see what would end up in my pockets. lol I seriously want Eberron before any other system, but I wouldn't hate seeing some new Dragonlance material. With so many worlds to choose from I think their safest (though boring) bet would be to go with the Realms. No matter what movie they make I will be there, opening day if not sooner, popcorn in hand and smile on my face.
If the movie is set in Dragonlance I believe they may test the water with a Dragonlance themed starter set, like Fantasy Flight did with the force awakens and SWRPG. My reasoning is that WoTC will likely want to capitalise on getting new players from the movie and a starter set with the Dragonlance theme will be the best way of doing so. Existing players may purchase it for the adventure and some new material for the setting and it won't be too much of a hard sell if the price point is the same as the last starter set.
If they did that and it sold well then maybe they might look to release new source books. Of course it will not only depend on if they do set it in Dragonlance, but if the film does well too.

Hey guys, I've created some conversions for 5e Dragonlance over here at the Nexus! Let me know what you think about them!

That's a pretty obvious sign, right?
Much of the 2e, 3.5, and even SAGA Dragonlance is available digitally.
I think they are all being absorbed into an other-dimensional portal to my bookshelf.
