I have a campaign starting soon that I have rolled up a human necromancy wizard for. Basically he was a scribe and calligrapher for his wife's adventuring party (She was a cleric under Lathandar) that was commissioned by some high clerics of Oghma to retrieve ancient and fragile documents from ruins and transcribe the contents into a more readable form. So what civilizations/information could I know from this information? Henrik speaks Common, Dwarvish, Elvish and can read infernal, if that helps at all.
If you want to go with the Forgotten Realms setting, Ancient Chult/Maztica/Omu is a good choice; but if you wanted to go with something a little more general that gives you a little more free reign, several ancient Dwarven civilizations came from around The Great Rift, and the great ancient elf civilization of Cormanthor was based out of Myth Drannor in the Dalelands. Additionally, since our character is a wizard, they may be interested in the ancient magical secrets of Netheril, a long destroyed empire of powerful magic users.
Those are just some quick examples; if you'd like to dive deeper, particularly into FR, I''d suggest checking out the FR 3rd edition campaign setting book. It's got a lot of great detailing about the world, and you can probably find something to suit your needs.
If you're wanting to stick specifically to Northwest Faerun, there are several ancient dwarven holds up along The Spine of the World, ancient elven ruins in the High Forest, relics of old elven civilizations on the High Moor, and a lot of old history buried in the mysteries of the Moonshaes. Hope that helps!
