So this is my first campaign and I need help figuring out to make this work. So the setting of the campaign is that people are going missing and only those that truly cared for them can remember them, everyone forgot they even exist. I'm trying to figure out how to make it work in my homebrew campaign. I know there are spells like erase memory and modify memory but they seem really specific. Any suggestions?
So as of right now it's sounds like I have 6 players. I figure there might be an NPC that gets coerced into the party knowing my players so I would guess about 8 characters fighting and I figure they won't go up against the BBEG until at least level 10 (starting at level 1) because the BBEG has the power to manipulate so many people's memories that I figure sooner than that would look weird. I figured the BBEG would have a bunch of underlings/hirelings and it would take them time to actually find out who the BBEG was, let along where to find him.
wow! Eight level ten players gives you quite a bit of room to work with. I'm thinking your big bad guy could be an elder brain who, along with two mind flayers is using an adult oblex to eat the memories of the characters for some nefarious purpose. The CR of these four monsters together is just about right for a deadly encounter with eight level ten players. But a lot of this is going to come down to how you set up your encounter. If you aren't familiar with these monsters, i would do a little reading up on how to play them effectively.
I like this solution because it seems to track very well with what you have already established as going on in the story. It's also a pretty good difficulty matchup for your character sat that point. Lastly, it gives you a ton of opportunity to have fun playing monsters that aren't just hack and slash bad guys with a million hit points. Now you just need to figure out why the elder brain would want to harass the players and go through the trouble of having his mind flayer create an adult oblex for that purpose.

How many characters and what level will they be when they ultimately go up against the bad guy?
