I recently received Wyrmslayer (a Dragonslayer great sword) from the Iron Baron epic adventure. It doesn't say it needs Attunement but my DM said it needs to be attuned! Does it? Also can I attune to it during downtime instead of waiting for a short rest during a new adventure? Also how much downtime would that require given a short rest is far less than the downtime unit of days! Thanks!
To be frank you should spend downtime only with appropriate downtime activities (page 4 of Season 5 AL player's guide), so you can't just write "spent 1 downtime to attune to magic item x" in the notes section (and filling the note section is required for any downtime expense).
Generally speaking when a character ends an adventure he is supposed to rest enough to fully identify any magical item found and restore all his expended resources too, so I usually suppose that when you start a new adventure a character could be attuned to any three owned items (for magic items borrowed from party members I would require attunement in game).
Specifically speaking the dragonslayer sword has no attunement requirements, so unless there is some special documentation about the attunement rules printed on the item certificate, your DM is wrong on this point.
Okay awesome thank you so so much XD DnDB has been an absolute godsend as a new player. This is basically replacing Reddit for all my silly new player questions haha

Well, if you want to attune to the item during downtime , you absolutely can. there is more than enough time. Just say it you did.
About the DM, make him happy. I found a little weird that a magical item does not require attunement, but...
On my log sheet should I log a full downtime day then?
I would say so, yes.

Generally, dragonslayers do not require attunement, but the Wyrmripper is a specific one with campaign documentation which says it does, so it does.
