So i was looking at the Adventurers League Dungeon master's guide and Players guide, and i have to admit i love the concept of the Adventurers League. However, there is one simple question (and maybe an idiot one) that i can't find answer to : When characters spend their downtime, what if one character don't have any to spend ? Or what would happen if characters spend different amount of downtime ?
I search on the internet but didn't actually find anything so maybe i can find my answer here ^^
The thing to remember with AL is that characters group up to take on an adventure and the session finishes, they all scatter their own separate ways.
This means one character can spend 4 weeks of downtime and another may have no downtime to spend - they can then group with each other again for the next AL session that both players attend.
The approach to "how was there enough time to do that?" is to just ignore it. :)
I mean, you have a situation where a character could be in the middle of an "inescapable" dungeon in a game on a Saturday, then on Sunday, the player uses that character for a different AL game set on the other side of the continent, then the following Saturday they resume the dungeon, but have with them the magic items they won from the Sunday game now.
Thanks for the precision about the last point, but my main concern is that if players want to spend downtime between two mini missions of the same adventure and they can't or just dont want to spend the same number of days, what would happen ? Because i understand how to handle it before or after a session but can't figure out how i should handle it while in session.
My first thought would ne that they just spend days and one spend less, it would just sit around for the difference spent by players without doing anything do they shouldn't have life expense but can't take a downtime activity
If we are talking for Adventurers League - Downtime spending is done individually. Its not something that more than one HAS to do (except for certain tasks like two wizards scribing spells from each other).
You could have one member of the party spend 20 DT days, and another spend 0, yet the next day is the same day for them. It's a concept that requires you to ignore proper timelines to allow certain tasks and activities to legally happen under AL rules.
So in your example, player 1 can spend DT and player 2 doesn't do anything. They then adventure together on the next "day".
