So my Wizard is solidly in T4 now and has great gear attunement wise, but nothing outside of that (I did get a +1 dagger at lvl 16 I was super excited about lol). The 2 modules we ran yesterday dropped a Vorpal sword and Efreeti chain which were awesome..... but I want some boots of elvenkind, bag of holding or Heward's Haversack, a decanter of endless water, etc. that will NEVER drop now that we are high level. Is there a way to do lower level things for lower level rewards? No matter what drops now attunement wise, it probably won't be an upgrade from what I am currently using. We also have so much gold and nothing to use it on and downtime is creeping up to levels of ridiculousness.
Do you think that they should allow Xanathar's magic item buying system to buy things that are of a tier or 2 lower that your character is? That would prevent power creep with being tier 4 you could get very rare while you are finding legendary, tier 3 can buy rare when you get very rare drops, and tier 2 could purchase uncommon when you are starting to get rare, and tier 1 can just buy common magic items which you should be able to by anyway.
BTW, the fights in the new tier 4 just released last week are trivial at best. Completely obliterated 2 Zulkirs of Thay in one round and their BBEG lasted until round 2. Just not great writing nor mechanically sound. Even the "traps" that you had to avoid were bypassed too easily.
I would think that the answer to this is trading. You can trade items in AL between other players characters and even your own characters at the cost of downtime. I've seen quite a few folks who roll on the magic items at the end of a DDAL module with the intention of trading it for something else. Trading with someone else playing the same module as you are does not cost downtime.
There are also several venues for trading. Apparently the DDAL facebook group has a discussion forum specifically for trading items. In addition, a popular fixture at DDAL epic events is Fai Chen which is an official DDAL trading house though only specific items are available for trade. Finally, you have to trade items of like rarity though I believe you can trade down rarity classes when dealing with Fai Chen ... e.g. trade a rare for an uncommon for example. You can't trade up classes.
So, if there is something you want that drops in a tier 2 adventure, you can play that adventure with a tier 2 character and hope to receive it at the end of the adventure. If you do, you can trade that item to your higher tier character for an item of the same rarity and at a cost of downtime for both characters.
