I am unclear how found consumable magic items are supposed to be treated, as in do they disappear at that end of the session or does the chosen player get to bring it along with him/her to another table/session/adventure? Looking at the current content catalog it appears that they don't get ignored under treasure headings, but beyond that I am lost ... so very, very lost.
Hey Dramegno - Consumables (potions, scrolls, etc.) get kept - from page 4 of ALDMG:
Consumable Magic Items. Potions, scrolls, and magical ammunition are kept and divided among the characters—encouraging equitable distribution. If more than one player wants an item and the disagreement can’t be resolved, determine the item’s owner randomly (such as by rolling a die).
Any gold is ignored, and if a permanent Magic Item is encountered, then it is unlocked for everyone that played.
Thank you I don't know how I missed that... I don't know why but the rules feel like that they are scattered by the four winds and as a dm I have to quest to find them.
They made it more complicated and confusing by such scattered rules. FAQ says treasure is session and not ignored see page 12 of FAQ. It says cannot be kept as the items go to dust at end of session, but first sentence says it is there.
"Ok. How Does Treasure Work? It depends. As a general rule, if it is found in an adventure, the characters can take it. Whether or not they can keep it is another matter." So is it ignored?
DMG says it is clearly not there. PG3 "Gold and Mundane Treasure. Any entry of a treasure or award with a monetary value is ignored." Clearly ignored?
Any reward with a monetary value is ignored - so gold pieces or things like "a silver cup worth 10 gp". These normally sit under the treasure/gold section at the end of a mod. Things that are magical consumables are still kept.
The line from the FAQ says "as a general rule", the specific rule on magical consumables being kept overrules it.Consumables are NOT mundane treasure, mundane is items that can be bought from the PHB.
For instance, in one adventure I'm going to run, the party can find a healer's kit. Is this ignored because it can be purchased as a "mundane", or is it considered a consumable and can be kept? And by the same lines, what happens with leather workers tools, or thieves' tools? How about a gambling set of Three Dragon Ante?
The healers kit can be used until the end of the session.
Gold and Mundane Treasure. Any entry of a treasure or award with a monetary value is ignored. Other mundane equipment can be used (but not sold) by the characters until the end of the session but is lost at the end of the session. Some nonmagical items encountered in hardcover adventures may be unlocked for purchased using treasure checkpoints. The ALCC will contain adventure-specific information regarding these items as well as when to award rewards that serve as exceptions to this paragraph.
Any spellbooks recovered by the characters may be kept by one character at the table (determined randomly in case of contention).
Magic Items. Unless stated otherwise in the ALCC, magic items specifically mentioned in an encounter become available for the characters in some fashion, depending on its type:
• Consumable Magic Items. Potions, scrolls, and magical ammunition are kept and divided among the characters—encouraging equitable distribution. If more than one player wants an item and the disagreement can’t be resolved, determine the item’s owner randomly (such as by rolling a die).
Pre season 8 the magic item count came into play with consumables just falling under the same decision process (group decision, count or roll). With season 8, how are consumables handled? The group decision/count/role section has been removed.
If consumable magic items are kept, then who (out of the players in the group) actually gets to keep the item or is there a consumable per player?
The count method is no longer valid because people can buy potions with treasure points/GP. If you purchased a potion with GP does that fall in your temp item count?
I would assume that it is the same process as for spell books which as worded in the Forgotten Realms DM guide or AL "Any spellbooks recovered by the characters may be kept by one character at the table (determined randomly in case of contention)." Which if you note is the same as the way you described.
The players decide how to divide magic consumables among the characters present. ALDMG

So which rule is correct?

Oh i know what they meant, but it is poorly written
Where would you rank things like tools and kits?
