I cant seem to find the answer for this any where, according to the rules of AL a character can only play through a single chapter or module once. I'm suppose to title it as: SKT1, SKT2, and ext. If I were to take my character to another group, who were also in this case playing Storm Kings Thunder, how would I know if I played through that chapter. I have terible memory, so I'm not able to tell until halve way through that chapter. When I attempt to ask the DM what is the actual name of this chapter, they refuse to answer and tell me to just label is as "SKT(X)". I don't want to miss out on a chance to play through a chapter I haven't played yet, but I don't want to cheat either. further more If I have a character from a previous season and want to work out which magic items I'v unlocked, I have no refrence to go back to to tell this. Since season 8 came out, it would be part of my responsibility to document which items my character has seen, but before that no one ever let me take a magic item I wanted. They just argued they needed it more, even thoe they have the item on a different character. I could lie and say that the "SKT(X)" game I played was in the chapter that had some item, but that's not right. This is one thing I like about the new rules, no one can stop me from getting what I could use, because they want it more. but again Since they wont tell me whitch chapter IM playing in I have no proof that i saw it.
I would be upfront with the DM and explain the situation. Also, make sure you're keeping accurate and detailed logs. I can't think of a DM who wouldn't at least review your logs and tell you if that character has already played that chapter.
It's the player's responsibility to record what modules/chapters their characters have done. As a DM, I run games for far too many people to do it for them.

In the ALFAQ_v82.pdf under the heading What Adventures Can I Play/Run? "Players are allowed to play an adventure multiple times, but a character may only participate in a given adventure or hardcover chapter once."
In the ALFAQ_v82.pdf under the heading Ok. How Does Treasure Work? "If the item—or the table on which it is determined—is specifically mentioned as being present in the encounter, the item is unlocked by the characters for later purchase."
In the Player’s Guide Version 8.2 under Item Unlocks. Note any magic items or special treasure unlocked or received during the session.
*EDIT* You can't unlock any magic items for content run in previous seasons. Thanks David42 for bringing this up. This answer can be seen in the D&D AL Facebook channels. Many player's and DM's reference it, but I never found the original link. Hopefully this will come out in the new material on November 6th. Since season 8 started on August 30th, 2018 magic item unlocks are earned from this point forward!
In the Player’s Guide Version 8.2 under Treasure Checkpoints. The cost and availability of some items unique to individual adventures can be found by your Dungeon Master in the ALCC.
In the Adventure League Content Catalog (ALCC) under each adventure heading code it lists special magic items unlocked in each encounter.

I do a brief look to see that the character is complete, that they are the right tier, that there are no illegal rules magic items , that stats look in range, and the character generally makes sense. If someone cheats on the log they have to live with it, not me. Understand that when these people cheat, other eyes are watching and usually someone comes up and says something afterwards. Then you might get your character audited, asked to leave, or prevented from using something.
It's the player's responsibility to record what modules/chapters their characters have done. As a DM, I run games for far too many people to do it for them.
I agree it is ultimately it is up to player to track!
how would they know what my character has done. they don't record anything.
This is depending on the DM and thoroughness! I inform the group the code for the adventure and if it is a Chapter of hardcover I ensure the player's note that too.
Personally I track the game sessions I DM using the AL Session Tracking form.
Options for the DM on suspected cheating - Never assume wrongdoing and keep it professional:
"Correct cheating players by quickly and discreetly (if possible) resolving the issue and make a ruling on what happens. [...] If you notice something amiss [...] discuss it with the player and make any corrections necessary."
"Review paperwork (character sheets, adventure logsheets, and certificates) at any time."
"Disallow a rules item in suspect."
Ask for a re-roll of dice roll that isn’t obvious to the table.
1) You can't unlock any magic items for content run in previous seasons. That content was run under previous season rules (where people rolled dice/decided based on who had the most) and one person received the treasure. You don't receive unlocks for past play. (I wish I could unlock items from past play since there were some items in games I played that some of my characters could really use but I just didn't win the rolls).
2) If you are playing AL then you have to have a character log sheet. On the log sheet you list what you are playing. If it is SKT chapter 3 then that is what you list. That character can't participate in SKT chapter 3 at any other table (even if you didn't complete chapter 3). The log is not granular enough to say I played the first 4 pages of chapter 3. However, you can continue to play chapter 3 at the same table you started it at if it hasn't finished. For example, I am participating in an AL Tomb of Annihilation run and I probably have 10 to 15 entries for ToA Chapter 2 since it can be a very long sandbox chapter. That character can continue to play chapter 2 at that table since the campaign is ongoing but I can't drop into chapter 2 at another table.
Similarly, as part of the campaign the DM included Return of the Lizard King, so the log sheet shows that the character spent 3 sessions playing Return of the Lizard King and then went back to Chapter 2 of ToA since it was an ongoing single table. We have also had characters drop in and out, some of them had done Return of the Lizard KIng or other Season 7 AL content before joining the HC ... but after playing Chapter 2 of ToA HC they can't play it on the same character elsewhere.
All of this book keeping is up to the player to organize. However, at the beginning of every session the DM has to supply his name, DCI number and the name/identifier of the content that will be played so it can be logged by the players for the specific characters. You can't have the same content listed twice on the same character sheet.

So, yes some DMs do record what you did!
