So, if you can reskin a race while using the same racial stats with just a different descriptions, what is the take on reskinning some spells? As an example a Shadow Sorcerer having their Fire Bolt look like smoky wisps of black flame? Still Fire damage type just looks a little different? Or a Warlock's Eldritch blast looking like he is throwing a translucent green javelin of energy? I know that some people equate the color to a damage type often. So is something like this ok?
As long as nothing mechanical changes, you should be fine. With reflavoring there is some concern for the integrity of the fantasy world. For instance, you wouldn't want to claim that your reflavored dwarf is a miniature battle mech because those don't exist in FR. You don't want to negatively impact someone else's experience by killing the mood.
It sounds like the kinds of things you want are reasonable (even desirable). If you are pushing it a bit too far, your DM will let you know.
In my experience cosmetic changes to spells are either encouraged or ignored ("what you describe makes no mechanical difference, so go ahead"), but hardly ever objected to.
