Some of the people I'll be at Origins with have expressed interest in playing some D&D (they've never played 5E). I figured I would run them though Lost Mine of Phandelver so they could have some experience (both personally and with a character). But I've never done organized play, and I'm a bit confused as to tracking works for home play. Once adventure logsheets are filled out, do they get submitted or entered somewhere? If the characters gain levels, how do they use those leveled characters at the convention?
All you have to do with the logsheets is keep up with them. It is based on the honor system. Most DMs I have run into will only even look through a logsheet if there is something seems unusal. If you roll into a Tier 1 module and have a +3 weapon, I am going to ask to see your logsheet.
Another question: do the player need to have DCI's? They are all keeping logsheets, but I dont have those fancy cards with DCI's to give them, and they haven't applied for one online.
You do not need a DCI number, However it does help to have one if you are playing at a local store and they want to report players for upgrading their wizards play network info. (Basically stores get various benefits for having games like dnd and magic played at them, and DCI numbers are used to "verify" that info).
They are completely optional for Organized play, but most prefer that at least the DMs have it.

Great, thanks for the info!
