In very excited anticipation for Descent Into Avernus I have decided to play a warlock of the fiend character.
I have took the pact of the chain boon so I may have an imp familiar, and I had the idea from an Epic a few months ago that perhaps I, or my dastardly servant, could add a little flavor to our roleplaying by perhaps offering fellow players tempting devil contracts on behalf of my patron. Naturally I can't have them give the players power or wealth because the rules and mechanics of adventurers league would not allow such things understandably, I would have it just be a roleplaying thing.
Keeping in mind that the ultimate goal would be the signing over of ones soul for eternal servitude to Zariel, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions of how something like this might be AL legally implemented?
Thank you very much for reading, see you in Avernus! :)
You could make a fake devil contract and have a copy in rl to give people more as a memento of your character. Pretty much any in game flavor is AL legal so long as there are no mechanical benefits. So you could say you’re talking to your patron or gain your warlock powers from your patrons that’s fine. but if you start asking for the patron to intervene in an adventure, give you items for the adventure, or impact the adventure in any way that would not be AL legal.
I think the best you could do is offer your in-game services to whichever player takes you up on selling their soul to your patron. So whoever signs the contract you'll focus on assisting them in combat or providing help for them during your adventure... maybe loan them the familiar for a bit. Should be interesting to see what kind of players would take you up on the offer... I'm sure the low-RP focused players might go for it in that meta-gamey way of knowing there isn't a permanent effect, but it would be interesting to see someone who takes their character more seriously who would also take up the offer.
EDIT: But also, I do want to double down on the idea that bringing an actual, physical contract with you for them to sign would make this a lot more fun and might attract more players to want to take up the offer.
Yeah, i was thinking of making a few yellow staing scrolls myself, would be quite fun I think RP wise.
I've just had an idea myself. Maybe I could take a level or two into cleric, just to get cure wounds, then perhaps if an ally is losing on their death saving throws my imp palski can just flutter down and mutter "oi, buddy. I got what ya need." presenting the contract. "I'll heal ya, but for a price." And of course if the player refuses the imp will just pout and say "aww, you're no fun" and just heal them anyway.
Could even present a contract to dying bandits and such, offering them mercy in exchange for their eternal souls after their inevitable demise, the loophole being that maybe mercy could just mean mery kill.
Stuff like this would certainly make things interesting, though it would probably be best to present no more than one per game, just so the novelty doesn't wear off, and to not slow the game down too much for everybody else.
Thanks very much transmorpher an Mickey for your replies.
I've gotta say, if I wasn't already playing as a Warlock whose soul is owed to someone else, I would probably take up this contract if it was offered to me in my AL game. Also I like the idea of keeping up the idea by just offering the contract to an NPC if none of the players want in on it.
See my AL games tend to be AL/hombrew mix. All characters are AL legal but the stories tend to deviate from AL based of decisions.
For instance as of right now one of our Warlocks before lvl 3 sold his soul for a devil to put our enemies to sleep once. Well when ever my LG Paladin finds out that he has been doing evil acts it will come to blows. Both me and the other player have talked about this in depth and are waiting to see when and what will happen as it also directly affects the direction the other Warlock can take as he also has his powers from a fiend but is still LG.

I think all of those are pretty great ideas!! Most people are desperate for injecting a little bit of flavor into their AL game s
