As they're put out the conversion (via twitter) would my level 6 paladin (with 30 AP Checkpoints) gain a level to 7 and then could pick 2 items (cap is 3 and I have a tier 1 weapon+1 already)? Except my character is in Curse of Strahd and we haven't found any magic items as that isn't really how AL seems to work?
Also it seems like it would be worthwhile to convert all existing TP to gold as you just lose them otherwise?
Advancement Checkpoints. All advancement checkpoints are removed and you gain a level. As per Season 9 ALPG, this level can be declined.
Treasure Checkpoints. All treasure checkpoints are removed.
Magic Items. If your character possess fewer magic items than their Magic Item Limit allows, choose a number of permanent magic items from those that the character unlocked by adventuring (items unlocked by the evergreen or seasonal unlock list, or other means aren't available for this purpose) that would bring them up to their Magic Item Limit.
With 30 ACP you could advance your character to level 7 and take two magic items you have previously unlocked. If you haven't unlocked anything then I would spend whatever TCP you have on season 8 evergreen items.
As for unlocking or acquiring magic items ...
In season 8, magic item unlocks depend on the module or hardcover you are playing. Typical 4 hour modules will contain a magic item that before season 7 would have gone to one player through a somewhat complicated algorithm, in season 8 it would have been unlocked for purchase, and in season 9 you can just take it if you want it up to your magic item count limit or by replacing one of the magic items you already have.
In your case, if you didn't find many unlocks in Curse of Strahd, that would be because the module doesn't have many magic items or your group just didn't find them. It isn't related to AL, it is related to the content being run.
You should have some treasure points of which are tier 2 and some tier 1. If you haven't spent any then your TCP should be the same as your ACP. In your case, I would probably pick an item from the season 8 evergreen list before that goes away on September 17 since you haven't unlocked anything in Curse of Strahd. The evergreen list includes items like Slippers of Spider Climbing or Cloak of Elvenkind for 16 TCP. I find the slippers particularly useful since it lets you move normally without using your hands on vertical or inverted surfaces.
Other than evergreen items, converting the rest to gold before season 9 starts would seem to be your best bet if there isn't a magic item you want to buy from the evergreen list.
Keep in mind that your DM may not want you to add magic items to your current campaign that you acquire from the evergreen list. You can simply decide not to play with them for those sessions if you like or just not use them so that they don't cause balance issues. However, the DM can't prevent you from actually purchasing them before season 9 starts if that is what you want to do.
