I'm about to head into an Adventure League Meatgrinder campaign and was thinking of building my first 5e Divine Caster. I tend to go heavy on flavour for my characters, so I'm actually considering one devoted to the Goddess of Pain.
My primary choice is Cleric, but the suggested Death Domain is not available. Can I pick a different domain to use with my chosen deity? Do I have to pick Life Domain or can I choose another Domain type?
The Death Domain is not in the PHB. It can be found in the DMG though, so if you want to pen and paper up a Death Domain Cleric of Loviatar, then you will need access to both books. This should still end up being AL Legal since AL Rules only care that you use the PHB and no more than one other source (the DMG in this case) for character creation.
To answer your other question....sure, you could probably flavor up the War Domain to fit just fine. A modification of the Life Domain might be a little trickier.
NOTE: Without specific campaign documentation, racial options that allow a character to fly at 1st level aren’t available for use Adventurers League play at this time. Additionally, options presented in other resources, such as the Death Domain found in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, are not allowed for play unless you possess specific campaign documentation that indicates otherwise.
It was mostly for the abilities and spell list. Ignoring resistance to necrotic damage and dealing extra necrotic damage on weapon attacks (versus Radiant for other Cleric Domains).
Might be able to flavour up a Fallen Assimar Cleric (War domain) and take levels in Wizard for access to the desired spells

Maybe I should clarify, I'm doing this the old fashioned pen and paper method, so the available resources on D&D Beyond are not applicable.
My question is more one of if it can be done to have a War or Life Domain Cleric who worships Loviatar in Adventure League.
I have to ask. Why no Death Domain?

The Death Domain is not available unless you received a cert allowing you to do so as a reward for participating in specific con games in the past.
