Im very new to D&D and I’m trying to DM for some of my friends, but not sure what stats I should use for 4 specific enemies in my game. The basic set up is that 4 lords of a city have become undead servants to a evil necromancer and I just want to know if I should use leveled player stats and classes or just kinda give them custom stats and abilities. I bet this question is super simple, but I could use the help from somebody with more experience.
I think it kind of depends on what you imagine the final battle with them is going to be like, or if they more intrigue focused.
The disadvantage of leveling them as a player character would is that you then have to manage that character sheet. But it also means that they do not have legendary actions and the like, so a final fight with them is going to be heavily influenced by the support you give them in terms of minions. But the advantage is they can start to feel real within the confines of the world as you build them and they gain abilities, it could be real good for brainstorming.
If they are undead, I would consider making them some type of vampire, the Monster Manual does have variants for the vampire mentioned as well that might be interesting. Otherwise you could just use that as a jumping off point and customize it from there (that's what I do to build custom NPCs).
