So, reading ahead in the Curse of Strahd manual, I see that the players can learn that the Mad Mage of Mt. Baratok is actually Mordenkainen who has gone mad. Now, I am not intimately aware of the lore surrounding D&D 5e, and I know that he is a prominent figure over all.
My question is: Does his appearance in Curse of Strahd make sense with the timeline? Are there any deeper implications of his appearance here?

Side note, this isn't really discussing DM's Guild Content -- maybe it's a better topic for the Story & Lore section of the forum.
Anyway, spoilers ahead.
"Mordenkainen later traveled to Barovia in an attempt to free the local population from its darklord Strahd. However, he underestimated Strahd's power and, after barely surviving a confrontation with him, he lost his spellbook and his staff, eventually losing his memory and being driven to the brink of madness. He became known by the locals as the Mad Mage of Mount Baratok."
I chock his appearance up to cameo more than anything -- at best he's a potential ally who can help the party fight Strahd (who still must be defeated using the necessary artifacts), otherwise he's just a nod to Gary Gygax and the world of Greyhawk.
If you want to get really creative, he could be the link from a Forgotten Realms adventure to a World of Greyhawk adventure, but for the time being such an endeavor would be your own design.

Whoops. I meant to put this in a different section. Thanks for the insight though
