Im planning a Calimshan homebrew, but I am quite stumped tbh.
I plan on setting it in 5e and in the 1490s DR like the other 5e official adventures.
My problem is that I don't really have a lot to go on. There is a lot of old 2nd and 3rd ed. stuff that I can use as history. But there isn't a lot for me to base an post spellplague adventure on.
What I know is that Calimport was run by the Genasi, and at war with the genasi of Memnon, and that the last human outpost in the land is Almraiven.
That at some point a Chosen of Illmater rose up and lead the humans to victory, retaking the cities and the land.
But is the ruler there The archmage Acham el Jhotos? What happened to the Syl-Pashas of Calimport? Is there an true heir, of any sort, to Calimport?
What factions operate in the region? Is there a war on between humans and the Genasi?
My question is; Do you know of any lore that you might share with me? Or am I free to wing it based on the best info I have?

Based on what little there was in the PH and Sword Coast guide, it made it sound like a relatively simple concept (Ottomans/Arabs with djinn and efreet). In digging into the Forgotten Realms wiki, it's suddenly a giant question mark. I get that they don't want to unnecessarily hem in GMs, but for those of us who just want to know the damned starting point, it's frustratingly contradictory. (Same thing happened when I tried to answer the simple question: "Where do dragonborn come from in Faerun?")
I'm always, always fine making stuff up, but I'm not well versed in the lore/books so it always feels like I'm about to rewrite something someone already knows from an older source book or fiction book.

My thanx.
