Yeah, I'm actually on several of these threads asking for different (seemingly very basic) functions that is yet to show up. The fact that we still can't add straight bonus health via item or feat is rather perplexing.

My guess is that certain items are hardcoded to be containers. Why else would it be hard to add it to a custom item? Hardcoding is bad. It is better to let the data do the work for you.
Checking in here at the end of July of 2024, almost 3 years after the thread was started. Still nada. Gooooods they are slow.
Ever since Hasbro/Wizards bought D&D Beyond, sadly there are tons of planned features that have been dropped / abandonned. I wouldn't hold my breath. They do the bare minimum.
That is ironic, as it seems they want to go more digital focused. The only way to do that is to have a stronger online applicaiton, and D&D Beyond is the way to do that.
The sad thing seems to be that they aren't actually interested in making a better platform, but rather making a platform that is good-enough and then just seize-and-desist anybody who threatens to do something better. It's the easiest way to make money when you have a strong IP. Just look at Nintendo and Palworld.

There is an easy workaround. Not ideal, but you can add a container that already exists, like a bag of holding or a pouch, and press customize to change its name.
That isn't a workaround, though. You cannot edit the description of the item so it still reflects the original text of the Bag of Holding including its size, dimensions, what it can hold. If your bag does anything special and you want that visible in the character sheet, you can only add text to the notes section which cannot be properly formatted and then it will still display the original Bag of Holding text underneath. If your custom container works differently, this creates a wall of messy, conflicting text.
As someone else suggested above, you can make a custom magic item with the properly formatted text applicable to your custom container, then place it inside the renamed other one and tell your player to review the item inside the bag of the same name for the item properties. It's still incredibly sloppy, and pathetic we have to consider these types of half-solutions after several years, now.

That’s why I prefer to use an alms box as my substitute since it has no weight, no weight limit, not dimensional restrictions, and a very neutral description.

It still contains a description, however. To some characters, referencing priests or donating items to charity might not be considered neutral as it is for you. It also does not have the automatic weight removal of anything placed inside of it functionality of some other containers, so cannot be used as a replacement for items like Bag of Holding if that is the type of customization someone is trying to accomplish.
We should be able to make custom containers with our own custom descriptions and statistics using the homebrew tools instead of these types of messy workarounds being our only option.

Okay, I’ll concede your point on the description. After all, there are more than 8,000,000,000 people on the planet so it’s statistically improbable that at least some folks might find the concepts of “priests” and/or “charity” to be in some way disagreeable enough to justify not using it. It’s moot though since it is not available as equipment on non-legacy characters anyway apparently.
As to the automatic weight deduction, simply leaving a container as unequipped means the total weight inside is not accounted for against the character’s encumbrance. That’s true whether the equipment is equipped or not.

When that box is unchecked, the weight of the container itself is also discounted. The character is presumably carrying the container and thus, that weight should not be discounted. Why push so hard to defend poor coding over and over?

I’m not defending anything. I’m offering suggestions to make do with what’s available to us. Why work so hard to 💩 all over ideas for accomplishing something that at least approximates what you want from someone who is doing nothing more than trying to be helpful?
I too have struggled with this. I use a variant of the workaround that Sposta uses.
I created the handy pouch, a belt pouch that holds as much as a regular backpack. It always weighs 1 pound. I add a belt pouch to the inventory and rename it handy pouch contents, set the capacity to 40, weight to 0, and never equip it. Clunky but works until something better comes along.

I'm glad I'm not the only one frustrated by this, but oooof, the fact it's been years and no addition of homebrew containers...
