Ok everybody:) I've started the PM thread to decide the next contests categories, and thanks to you all for helping answer my questions! I tried to get it done today, but I didn't have time, so tomorrow I'll be talking more about the voting system I proposed earlier, and asking what you guys think of it. I've also asked the other competition winners what they think of it, since you guys sadI'm supposed to talk to them about that kind of stuff:)

It seems to me that the honor system of voting for yourself could fail easily. Wouldn't it be easier to simply have a give yourself a 5 rule? Then you could check that every contestant gave themself a 5 out of 5.
then at a glance if every category had a 5 in it at least once you would know that the author followed the rules. But if you go by the honor system then you have to check every vote and who it was from to make sure

This is all well and good, except that not every contestant always votes! Better to just have people not vote for themselves!
Regarding repeats of previous themes, which came up earlier, bear in mind that we can have the exact same theme 3 times without repeats, as long as it's in different categories each time!
Congratz to the winners, I hope to get involved in the next one again!

So I didn't win the DM category after all? Sad.
Yeah, I didn’t receive a PM.
Dang, I thought I started it. I must have messed up. I'll try and get it working later.
Edit: I realized I saved my thing as a draft instead of sending it, but then an error showed when I tried to send it just now. So yeah, I'll make sure it works later. I'm so sorry for messing up making this PM thread, I really thought I'd done it.
YES!!! I think, after getting error after error, I've finally been able to start the PM thread:) Or it says I have at least.
So in the PM thread (or whatever you call it) with Yamana and MilestoGo to pick the categories, I also asked to get their feedback on the new voting system I'm proposing. However, I also would love your guys feedback on the voting system. I described it HERE, and in short, it uses two categories (Balance/playability and Creativity/idea) to vote for, each one through five, and then those scores would be averaged out. My goal with this system is to do the following:
1. Avoid ties.
2. Stop you from having to cram all your thoughts into one score.
3. Having the voting system remain relatively simple, and having it not take too long to vote, by not having too many categories and things to judge.
4. Cover the relevant categories, and not leave any important areas out.
I'd love to here whether or not you guys have any system ideas to propose that might complete these goals, or what you think of this system. And again, I'm so sorry other category winners for you guys having to pay for my lack of being good with tech and receiving way too many errors:)

I think the change looks good. My only thing is wouldn't it be easier just to add the two scores together to get a final total rather than averaging? What I had done was I took all of the votes for one of the criteria, averaged those out to form the final score for that criteria, and then added all three final scores together to get the total. Averaging all of the scores should work just as well, but I think its more fun to see bigger numbers at the end for the winner
Since there are only two categories, maybe it would be good to have people rate things on a 1-10 scale instead of 1-5? I think at least one other person suggested a more flexible scale than 1-5. It might not make a difference, I don't know, but I think that would probably help further to avoid ties.

I feel like its easier to feel out a 1-5 system. Like judging the difference between a 2, 3, 4 out of 5 is pretty easy since you can basically label it as Bad (1), Flawed (2), Average (3), Good (4), Fantastic (5). It might be harder to quantify which score is the most appropriate to give on a 1-10 scale . For example, if I think an entry is Good but not Fantastic, is it better to give a 6, 7, or 8 out of 10? Can I justify giving this one a 7 if I gave another one I had mixed feelings about a 6?
Idk, maybe its just me but I feel like switching to a 1-10 system would require alot more thought and analysis to go into each vote, which isnt necessarily a bad thing.

For me the problem with 1-10 is that so many people do it differently. For example, in some 1-10 voting systems, 5 is average. In others, it's horrendous. Even if you do explain how it works, I think some people might get confused on whats average, whats good, and whats bad, with a 1-10 system. Much more so then if it's 1-5, since that is pretty universally used for reviews of products, and nothing else that I can really think of.

1-5 actually is used for school grades as well in some countries like mine (Austria); but 1 is the best and 5 the worst. This had me confused a bit the first time I voted for a contest here as I was not sure whether 1 or 5 would be the best score.
I think as long as it's made clear whether 1 is best or 5 is best (I'd go for 5 being best because big numbers are best!) then 1-5 on two categories is good.
The traditional one for surveys is a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being "hated it", 3 being "don't mind either way", and 5 being "Loved it".

That does make sense. I, oddly, actually see it the opposite way, though - 10 is equivalent to the previous 5, 2 is equivalent to a 1, etc. Basically, what I was suggesting was more "we should allow more nuance than the rather stark differences between the numbers from 1 to 5." Another way to verbalize what I suggested is to allow halves (so you could rate something 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, etc.). It might just be that my brain works weirdly, but to me the slightly greater nuance would be nice and might make it easier to rate stuff. It seems like I'm the exception here, though, so I don't exactly expect this to get implemented. (And just so y'all know, I do think that the 1-5 system has worked just fine, and it would continue to work just as well, if not better.)

Ok, so I made a small FAQ & Mini-Guides section for the next COTFB if that's okay. If I made a mistake with any of my answers or stuff, please, please tell me. When the next thread starts (it hasn't started yet) I think I'm gonna include this section in it, unless you guys don't want me to. So what do you guys think of it?
Guides & Mini-FAQ*
WAIT! Before you see the 5th level Wall of Text in this FAQ’s* & Guides section, and decide not to submit to the competition because you don’t want to read it, remember that reading this section is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL. You do not need to read any of this to submit something for the competition, to pick a category, or to become the next judge. This is merely a helpful tool if you’re confused. You have no obligation to read or use it!
Guide for Competition & Category Winners.
Competition Winnner: The competition winner becomes the next judge, they are responsible for doing the following:
They must start a private message thread between all the other category winners to figure out what themes the next categories will have. The judge must also pick the themes for all the categories they won. When possible, it is best to avoid reusing the same theme for the same category multiple times, though repeating themes for the same categories will be unavoidable eventually.
The judge must start the next competition thread. They can copy & paste most information from the previous competition thread, but must change the relevant information, such as dates and category themes. If you are the next judge and don’t know how long a given part of the competition, such as voting, should last, then just look at how long it lasted in the last competition, and have it be the same length for your competition. The judge should also update the “Contestants” section of their competition with links to each entry, and the name of the user who submitted it.
Once the time to submit entries ends, the judge is responsible for starting the google form for voting. If a judge doesn’t know how to do this, there will most likely be someone from the previous competition who would be willing to help if asked.
The judge should remove troll votes if there are any, and announce the scores and winners of the previous competition, after voting ends. It’s alright not to be able to do this immediately after voting ends, but the judge should try to do it as quickly as they can.
The judge, just like any other category winner, cannot submit anything to a category they created, or significantly impacted the creation of.
Category Winners: A category winner must do the following:
They must pick the next competition's theme for the category they won. Other category winners can help advise you or give you ideas for the theme, but ultimately, it’s up to you to pick it. The judge should start a private message thread with you and the other category winners, and that’s where you tell them your next category idea.
If you pick a category's theme, you cannot participate in it in the next competition. In addition, if you played a very, very significant role in picking another category’s theme, it is best for you not to participate in it. For example, if another contestant gives a list of their five ideas for the next competition and lets you pick it, then you probably shouldn’t participate in that category for when that theme comes up. However, if you just say something like, “Ooh, that sounds like a cool category idea,” or, “I like that idea but it is a little confusing, maybe you could word it differently?” Then you didn’t play that signifigant of a role in choosing that category, so you can still participate in it.
Mini FAQ* for competition contestants:
Q. Wait, how do I submit?
A. You just make a post in the competiton thread with either a link to your entry, or your entry typd out in it. It helps to add what category you’re submitting to, but it is not strictly necessary since it’s pretty easy to figure out what type of category the entry is for.
Q. Can you vote on your own submission?
A. As described in the “Voting” section of this competition, you cannot vote on any of your own entries. Simply act as if they didn’t exist on the forms, you can still vote for everyone else’s submissions. This is an honor rule, since there is no way to enforce this, but we trust that contestants will do their best not to break this rule.
Q. Where can I find the forms for voting?
A. When the competition submission time ends, voting will start soon. You vote on a google form. The judge should link the forms near the voting section when they’re up, and they will probably also make a post on the thread announcing that voting’s started with the link.
Q. Can I have multiple submissions in the same competition?
A. Yes, you can have multiple submissions for the same competition. HOWEVER, as described in the “Contest Categories” section of this competition, you can only have one entry per a category. For example, you can make something for the DM’s Options, PC Options, and Inspirational Options, but you can't make two things for PC Options and one for DM’s.
Q. I’ve already submitted something for X category, can I change my submission for it?
A. Yes, you can change your submission for a specific category as long as the deadline for submissions has not yet been reached. Do remember that if you’re changing your sumission, it is best to edit your original post with your first submission to say that it is obsolete, and necessary to make a new one to announce & link your new submission. Also, do keep in mind that it does create a bit more work for the judges when you edit your submission, because they have to update the links. However, it is alright to do so.
THE NEXT COMPETITION THREAD IS UP!!!! If I made any major mistakes starting it, please tell me. Thanks to the other competition category winners for picking such cool, great categories. I hope I didn't rush anyone in picking a category, I did my best to be patient and wait for them to be picked. Anyways, here's to another COTFB!
