Just asking for some other folks input. I'm making a custom race that is going to probably end up with several different options to try to keep it balanced rather than giving too many traits to the base race. Initially I was hoping to have an option of several subraces and a young/old variant of each but looking at the character builder there doesn't seem to be much point in building both variants and subraces. So, am I understanding that correctly? Would it just be a better option to simply build using one or the other? Initially I thought you could choose both a subrace and a variant when building a character, why else have them labeled as different things?
A subrace gets all the traits from its base race, and it’s own subrace traits too. A variant race replaces some of the base racial traits with its own alternate traits. That’s why they’re labeled as different things. Also, there are no real rules for aging in this edition, so making a young and old version would be very much not in keeping with the rest of D&D.
Yeah, the only aging option I recall (I think) was -1 Strength/+1 Wisdom or something like that. But yes, I'm aware age isn't really a factor in 5e, but we're talking about homebrew here, it doesn't need to adhere to that. But according to your answer, I'm assuming I was right in thinking there's no way to choose a variant and a subrace. Thanks, hope you have a good day.
Yeah, but it could be cool, especially for say an amphibian, kangaroo, or reptilian race, that is small in youth but like they have indeterminate growth so the older version around age 30-50 are medium, & maybe a third elder version has powerful build.
