I am trying to put together a subclass feature for a warlock subclass that allows you to use your charisma modifier in place of your strength modifier when making strength saving throws. I started out with a feature that has options so that either “charisma” or “strength” could be selected (in case someone has a higher strength and doesn’t want to use charisma), but I can’t figure out how to use the charisma modifier as a replacement for the strength modifier in strength saving throws. Is that possible?
The closest thing I could think of was to have the “charisma” option use a modifier with type “Bonus” and subtype “Strength Saving Throw” and ability score “Charisma,“ but I think that just adds charisma to the strength saving throw rather than replacing the strength modifier with the charisma modifier (in other words, the strength saving throw will end up as STR + CHA instead of just CHA). Is that right? Is there a way to make the strength saving throw use only the charisma modifier?
When I tested that out, I must have done something wrong anyway because it ended up changing the strength saving throw to +197 or something like that. Even if it isn’t possible to replace the strength modifier with the charisma modifier in a strength saving throw, any ideas as to why the strength saving throw became +197 with the above modifier?
If you add the URL for your text character sheet to your post, and set that character to public, I can take a look and might be able to tell you what happened. (I already have a strong suspicion however.)
No, you can’t swap which ability is used to another ability’s saving throw, but you could reword it to let the player roll a Cha save instead of a Str save and then the player would just roll that instead. Or you could also simply nix the Options and just grant the Cha mod as a flat bonus to Str saves. That would also work. Otherwise it would have to be plain text, and then the player would have to customize their character’s Str save.
Thanks for the reply. Using the charisma save instead also adds the PB, which I want to avoid, so it sounds like there’s not a way to do it.
I’m creating the subclass from a third party source so I can use it on here. I’ll probably just go the plain text route to make it easier since I am not making something new to spread around.
If a feature were to grant Cha modifier to Str saves, how would that modifier be done? Modifier with type “Bonus,” sub-type “Strength Saving Throw,” and then what? Ability Score of Cha? Maybe I had something else checked, but I think that was what I had done that messed up the save after selecting the option (although maybe I could try it without it being an option).
*Edit: I just tried it again as a straight modifier instead of a selectable option, and it worked. Not sure what I messed up last time, but this is fine for now as a workaround because the character has a +0 str mod (and I can make the manual changes if needed). Thanks again.
Correct, Modifier: Bonus->Subtype: Str Saving Throw->Ability Score: Cha is the correct Modifier to do that. As for why the calculation got screwed up before I can imagine two possibilities:
When you created the initial Modifier you may have inadvertently clicked or entered something else in addition and that was the result. (Happens, especially if one has a cat or a tendency to rest one’s fingers heavily on the keyboard.)
There is actually a documented intermittent bug that occasionally affects some class/subclass feature Options that grant bonuses, but not all of them and not all the time. Now in 5e24 all Fighting Styles are feats, but in 5e14 they were technically class feature Options, and were programmed as such. From time to time, the Archery Fighting Style (and I think perhaps either Defense or Dueling on very rare occasions if memory serves) seems to get kinda stuck in a loop and applies itself to the occasional character sheet multiple times leading to absurdly high bonuses. The same Option stacking glitch might have occurred to your feature Option and multiplied the bonus it grants several times. It might have never happened to another character sheet ever again though. The glitch seems to be sporadic, enigmatic, and unpredictable that way. 🤷‍♂️
