So, I would like to share a Homebrew I had in mind in order to 'fix' the Great Weapon Master, by spliting into to two. One basically the same we got on 2024 PHB with a couple extra words that make it only work with Heavy Meele Weapon. And one new called Great Artilery Master.
GREAT WEAPON MASTER
Prerequisite: Level 4+, Strength 13+
Ability Score Increase: Increase your Strength score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
Heavy Meele Mastery: When you hit a creature with a Melee weapon that has the Heavy property as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can cause the weapon to deal extra damage to the target. The extra damage equals your Proficiency Bonus.
Hew: Immediately after you score a Critical Hit with a Melee weapon that has the Heavy property or reduce a creature to 0 Hit Points with one, you can make one attack with the same weapon as a Bonus Action.
GREAT ARTILLERY MASTER
Prerequisite: Level 4+, Dexterity 13+
Ability Score Increase: Increase your Dexterity score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
Heavy Ranged Mastery: When you hit a creature with a Ranged weapon that has the Heavy property as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can cause the weapon to deal extra damage to the target. The extra damage equals your Proficiency Bonus.
Skewer: When you attack a target that is Prone it no longer imposes Disadvantage on your Attacks using a Ranged weapon that has the Heavy property.
So, basically the "Extra Proficiency in Damage" is the same, but one gains an possible Bonus action attack and the other allow to ignore Prone condition on Ranged attacks.
My toughts on Skeweer is: Prone become really proeminent in 2024 and both the heavy crossbow and longbow carry more weight to their attacks compared to shortbow/light/handcrossbow, so they should have a easy time to hit a prone character if they are well trained. You are not going to gain advantage like Meele Weapons gain, but ignoring Disadvantage sounds good enough for me.
Also, now the Prerequisite is 13+ Dex and you can increase your Dex Score instead of Strength, which for me makes sense, since the requeriment for using properly a heavy ranged weapon is 13 Dexterity.
