I've been homebrewing a lot for a setting for my players and I'm currently working on a species.
the problem I'm encountering is that they get a free cantrip of their choice, any cantrip, and then their spellcasting ability for that cantrip is based on the spell list it came from. here's the description:
"You learn one cantrip of your choice from any spell list and can cast it using the associated ability score: Intelligence for wizard spells, Wisdom for cleric and druid spells, and Charisma for bard, sorcerer, and warlock spells. If the spell appears on multiple spell lists, choose one to determine the spellcasting attribute for that spell."
I have found it to be difficult to accomplish. How would I go about doing this? Is it even possible? And if not what's the closest I can get?
You would create 3 Options attached to that species trait, one for each of the three ability scores. Name one of them “Wizard (Intelligence),” one of them “Cleric or Druid (Wisdom),” and one of them “Bard, Sorcerer, or Warlock (Charisma).” Then you would add a spell selection to each of those three Options, one attached to the first Option which uses Intelligence as the spellcasting ability and offers a choice of a wizard cantrip, one attached to the second Option using Wisdom which offers a choice from the cleric or druid lists, and the third you should be able to guess based on the last two. You can learn all about how to implement those steps (the Options & the spell selections) in the Homebrew Subclasses & Species FAQ, question #s 1 for Options and 14 & 15 for the spell selection: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq#HomebrewSubclasses&SpeciesFAQ).
