I've been skimming through and I haven't found any definitive guide on how to do this or what the different options will cause. Let's take the new UA Variant Cleric as an example.
Class > Cleric Subclass > UA Example Goal > Add Cause Fear to the spell list without it being 'always prepared' or 'at will' Purpose > To mimic expanding a spell list without permanently enabling that spell on a subclass
Is this even possible and if so what are the steps to take?
Assuming I have experimented and read the forum, can you provide me the steps to do this.
For example lets say...
Copy Forge Domain Open it up Add Cause Free to the spell list Is it added to the selection of spells at the bottom of the main section? Doesn't appear to be. Is it added to the domain spells? Doesn't appear to be. Do you create a new class feature titled "Expanded Spell List" and add it there? Didn't appear to work either.
Add a feature just like the domain spells, click “Hide in Character Sheet” scroll down to “Spells,” and click “Add Spell.” Put the Cause Fear as the spell name, scroll down until you see three fields: “Consumes Spell Slot,” “Counts as Spell Known,” and “Always Prepared.” Set them to “Yes,” “Yes,” and “No.” SAVE! That should work. Just keep “adding” the spells you want that same way until you’re through your list.
For “Prepared” casters like Clerics, Druids, and Artificers, if you put them in the field at the bottom of “basic information” then they will automatically be always prepared. For “Learned Casters” like Bards and Sorcerers I believe it would simply add them to the spell list.
That appears to permanently add it to the cleric's prepared spell list so it can be cast all the time but does not appear in the list when you select "manage spells"

Mellie has you covered, with this stickied thread in this very forum! 😊
Sorry, I just realised i misunderstood what you're asking.
The answer is SUPER simple - just add the spells you want to the "additional specific spells" section on the homebrew subclass:
Please note that each class works slightly differently for how their subclasses add spells - we've implemented the rules that Wizards of the Coast adhere to with their subclasses.

Adding to custom feature "Expanded Spell List" via "Add Spell" with settings as shown creates cause fear as "At Will" and does not add it to the sheet.
Deleting "Expanded Spell List" and adding cause fear to the bottom section as shown in Stormknights creates it as Always Prepared
Would the copy a spell method accomplish what I'm aiming for with just extra work or is it not possible to have a spell exist on the Known Spells List without it being always prepared?

If you play with those three settings I mentioned you should be able to find a combo that works. I have done it before, I must not remember the exact way correctly off the top of my head.
If you copy the spell, just put your homebrewed version of the subclass as one of the available lists for the homebrewed version of the spell.

Quick Question. I am not sure if anyone knows the answer to this.
Is there any way to add spells to a Bard Subclass, and have these spells always prepared? Appreciate this may not be the way Wizards do things, but it is how I would like to set up this particular subclass.

Yes. Input the spells in the “Additional Specific Spells” section of the Basic Information heading.
I'm so close to being done with my subclass for cleric, but I have 2 always prepared 1st level spells and I don't know where I messed up for them to be always prepared, also the spells list has duplicate spells and the like, is this from the basic info where I have cleric and druid listed as classes?

It is possible. “Create” your subclass using a copy of the one you want. When you add spells to it, simply set them as “Always Prepared->NO”

Won’t that make them as “Always Prepared?”

I'm having a similar problem, I'm trying to change the bonus spell group from healing to necrotic any idea?
I don't believe there's a sub-modifier for that yet.

Update, I believe I figured it out.
I am trying to do this for a homebrewed warlock subclass, but it isn't showing the additional spells in the spell list. What am I doing wrong?
