D&D Beyond offers the ability to link certain aspects on the forum in mouse-over triggered tooltips, such as magic items, monsters or combat actions - examples being Adult Black Dragon and dash. To create tooltips in this way as these, use the appropriate [tag][/tag] around the desired subject.
These tooltips can be used in most text boxes on D&D Beyond, such as: forum posts; campaign notes section; homebrew descriptions.
Example: [magicitem]Sun Blade[/magicitem]
Use the following within the [ ][/ ] bracket system:
action - an action taken in combat - e.g. dodge, search and ready
Additionally, tooltips support the written text of the tooltip being different from the actual item or monster text. This is great for plurals for example:
Ioun Stones of [magicitem]ioun stone of strength;Strength[/magicitem] and [magicitem]ioun stone of regeneration;Regeneration[/magicitem] would display as:
Note: Tooltips do not function in the character sheet. If you create an item with a tooltip to Magic Missile, the tooltip will not be active in the character sheet.
Tooltips can now specify sources for when you have content with legacy and non-legacy versions. This was introduced with the release Monsters of the Multiverse to allow tooltips to differentiate between content options that have more than one version.
You can specify the monster source within the opening clause of the tooltip by adding ' src=' in the opening tag, for example replacing [monster with [monster src= and then the source.
For example
[monster src=vgtm]Vegepygmy[/monster] will link to Vegepygmy from Volo's Guide to Monsters
[monster src=motm]Vegepygmy[/monster] will link to Vegepygmy from Monsters of the Multiverse
If you do not include the source opening tag, by default the tooltip will point to the legacy version
If in doubt as to what the src code is for a book, it's in the URL of that book after 'source/', but to save some time:
Volo's Guide to Monsters; vgtm
Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes: mtof
Monsters of the Multiverse: motm
Currently source tags are supported for [monster], [monimage] (monster image), and [magicitem] tooltips

A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?
Update:
The dev team have expanded how the tooltips work for MONSTER and MAGICITEM tooltips.
I have updated the post above with the information.
