(Do I need to roll something other then investigation to recover some arrows?)
Investigation: 17
Vars looks to Bjorn and Frangipani expectantly, waiting for an answer to Sparhawk's question. He also continues his search for arrows and looks around the wreckage of the wagon for anything salvageable.
You are able to find 8 goblin made arrows and two of your own.
( a shame Sorsha never mentioned what Ruhm had informed her about what happened with the minotaur...)
From Bernard you have a really nice cloak, his coin pouch containing 20 platinum, 200 gp, and 600sp. The was sealed letter.
Bjorn found 2 chests one small and a larger, fancier one. The fancy one is locked. Also a pile of random weapons and armor pieces of mixed quality, about 20 weapons and 10 armor pieces
Vars looks the arrows over to make sure that there are no cracks in the shafts and that the arrowheads are still secured on nicely. Once satisfied, he sticks them all into his quiver.

"He ran off over the hill there. Big guy like that, he'll be leavin' heavy hoofprints. Shouldn't be hard to find."
"I suggest we get this box open so we can stash the coin in it. Kurth is taking a cut, so we'd best keep it separated from our own money. I'll see if what's left of my lockpicks can get it done." Dexterity check to unlock the fancy chest: 11
"As for the letter... No reason why we shouldn't read it. Provided it's not written in goblin. Speaking of, let's keep watch. If one of those buggers comes around here, I want him to translate the note from Abernathy's basement. Seeing as I can't see in the dark, I suppose I'll take first shift. Shall we pull up next to the cliff face?"
(lol, maybe she left us a note on that one piece of seaweed.)
Vars nods to Bjorn, "Yeah, I don't think he'll be difficult to track, but we still might not be able to catch up with him all that quickly. Unless he took something we should be worried about, I say we should probably head back and get rid of this body before anything else. While we're in town, we can see whatever that fellow we met on the road wanted us to do. If its worthwhile, we can go after that. If not, we can try to track down the minotaur, follow this map I have, or we can go see about the job at the shrine with the werewolf and the goblins." He shrugs, "We could also go after that murderer...we've got lots of options from here really. No reason to chase the Minotaur if there isn't any profit involved."
"Alright, I'll take second shift. If I catch one of those blasted goblins..." he laughs. "Well, we can make him read the letter first. That's a good idea."
"Nice work Bjorn. I have learned that all warfare is based on deception. Your actions on the other ridge and at the wagon may have won us the battle.
Lets look for a defensible position, gather our equipment, and take a good long rest. In addition, I would suggest that if any of you need upgrades to weapons or armor, now would be a chance. Frangipani, thank you for keeping a level head. Your powers brought two of us back from the steps of death. Strangely, our captain is gone so after a good rest, we should consider how we want to run things around here." Sparhawk pauses, "I want to thank all of you for working as an effective team. To be honest, between the minotaur, Bernard, and that archer, the odds were not in our favor. Each of you rose to the occasion. This is our biggest accomplishment and I'm glad you are all my friends." Sparhawk smiles at them all genuinely and gives Bjorn a big hug.
"Ok team, here is a basic inventory before I rest, " Sparhawk looks exhausted. "I'm not sure what's in the two chests." He lies down and falls asleep almost instantly.
Pile of random 20 weapons, 10 armor pieces, mixed quality
8 goblin arrows
2 of our own arrows
gemstones are: 2 citrine , 2 Star Rose Quartz, a moonstone, a carnelian, 2 Zircon and 4 rectangle pieces of jade. The jewelry is a mix of necklaces, rings and bracelets. Most made from shells and such.
“I can check out the loot in the morning. Bjorn, I can let you see in the dark, but only for a hour.” Eberk uses Eyes of the Night. Bjorn has 300 ft dark vision.
Sparhawk examines the wax seal on the letter, to see if it looks familiar to him. (Investigation: 22
"Anyone have any skill at lock picking, and perhaps a detection of magic on these items?" Sparhawk asks his friends.
(Dwar, maybe you could make an administrative decision that Sorsha did reveal some of that info to us from Rhum?)
(Assuming we get our cart, lets itemize, heal, examine the items, and take a long rest?)
Sparhawk doesn’t recognize the seal other than the fact the lettering used is definitely not from any local cultures, maybe from one of the lands across the sea? the envelope itself has a sort of spice scents, like cinnamon or cloves..
( we will keep what happens to the Minotaur a mystery for now, let the plot thicken a bit)

You jiggle the picks, you pull, you twist…the lock doesn’t open for you. It feels like a very complicated lock. The small chest has several pieces of jewelry and loose gems. The gemstones are: 2 citrine , 2 Star Rose Quartz, a moonstone, a carnelian, 2 Zircon and 4 rectangle pieces of jade. The jewelry is a mix of necklaces, rings and bracelets. Most made from shells and such.

Vars walks over to where Bjorn is messing with the chest, "Here, let me try." If Bjorn lets him take the lock picks, Vars will attempt to deal with the lock.
(This is just a dexterity check right? I have proficiency in thieves tools, so do I add my proficiency bonus?) Dex check: 6 Dex check with proficiency: 25

(Yes to dex and yes to adding bonus if your profishient…lol, new word)
you too struggle with this lock. Top quality engineering on this box, clearly was an expensive chest to have made.
Bjorn responds to the hug by rapidly cycling through incorrect reactions. First he begins to duck, then starts to instinctively pretend he sees something shocking behind Sparhawk, nearly defaults to a hasty elbow to the stomach, before arriving a second or two too late at the proper, hearty embrace shared by warriors the world over. "Er. Suppose so. I'm not really sure what all happened..."
He finally settles on a reasonably gracious response about the time Sparhawk is already asleep. So instead, he holds the letter high and declares, "we have here the key to understanding what we're caught up in. It's thanks to you all, really. I can't convincingly take credit for this one." He grins. "Time to take a look." He cracks open the seal.

Vars lets out a huff, handing Bjorn's lockpicks back. "Thing must be broken," he mumbles.

Bjorn
Your vision blurs for a moment before everything becomes a vortex of colors and random shapes, you see a man of some sort, the skin on his face seems like leather, stretched tightly over his skull, he has a long, pencil thin Manchu style mustache. He is laughing. His image shatters into a million rats who immediately swarm you…
Vars
Your vision goes blank..nothing but darkness, you feel cold. Are you dead? out of the darkness a bird comes flying towards you, it has many colored feathers. It laughs at you. It’s a parrot and it is holding a map. You recognize the map as the one you purchased. “ Squawwwk, the key…the key…” and then vanishes

Frangipani zeros in on the shell jewellery paying no attention to the gems.

Bjorn cracks the seal on the letter and immediately a spice scented gas emits from the wax as it begins to break down.
