While in Phandalin, Sister Garaele hands Farnakees the following letter.
"I was told not to show this you, but I believe this may be important for your group to learn."
The contents of the letter are as follows:
Guten Tag, Schwester Garaele.
Ich bin schreiben regarding the decision of the Harper Herald to the possible recruitment of the adventurers currently active in the Schwert Baume.
Die Antworten of the Herald is as follows: nein, nein, nein, nein, nein!
Ich ubereinstimmen with the Herald's decision. You forget that I have met with these adventurers. I concede your assessment that the goliath is noble and good-hearted and would make a fine addition to the Harpers. Unfortunately, his character is brought into question given the nature of his associates. The elves and the dwarf are clearly not Awoken enough to be Harpers; as for the Hoo-man, I suspect he has crossed a moral event horizon or two in his career, and will cross many more before his life is over. Given the character of that wizard, the group might be better off finding employment at the Miner's Exchange, nicht wahr?
I have investigated the party's claims that the disturbances around Phandalin may be linked to an old Feywild tale, but this is clearly preposterous. The tale is an ur-myth of some kind, alleging that the origins of the lycantrophic curse were tied to an event that happened in Faerie thousands of years ago.
The story goes that when the moon waned, the moon goddess wandered the land as a beggar. She found safe harbor and welcome in the courts of the Summer, Spring, and Autumn Fey, and when her time of ascendance returned, she rewarded those eladrin generously for their kindness.
But when she arrived at the Fortress of Frozen Tears, the Prince of Frost was too aloof to see her. Instead, she sought aid from his dukes and duchess, two great lords and a great lady of the Winter Court. The great lady refused to give her even a single copper; one great lord refused to share his food, while the other beat her
and drove her away. When her time of ascendance came, she left three silver idols for these eladrin. The rat idol turned the lady and her followers into wererats, as punishment for their greed. The boar idol turned one elf-lord and his retinue into wereboars, for their gluttony. The wolf idol turned the last elf-lord and his army into werewolves, as befit their viciousness.
When the Prince of Frost learned of what had happened, he was terrified -- of the scandal. Though aloof, he wished no one to mock the courtesy of his court. He drove the lycantrophes into the mortal realm, where they spread their curse. But the lords and lady were bound into the idols, so they would not spread the story of his shame to lesser ears.
The title of the story is strange, but it appears to refer to a part of the story now lost, detailing where the Prince of Frost hid the idols.
As I said, a Kindermarschen not worthy of serious attention.
As a final word, remember my instructions Schwester Garaele: recruiting that group into the Harpers is verboten!
