"I am the chair of the Hands of TIme, as my great mentor, Trobriand, was before me" Saddam replies. "All, not otherwise barred by order of the Guvners, may apply for entry. There are certain requirements , of course, but these reflect the aptitude and perseverance of the applicant. Foremost among these requirements: the construction of a Masterwork of Technology of the applicant's own design. We have ample materials and every tool that has ever been made here in this space. If you thought the Temple of Gond and their Day of Wonders was a sight, you have seen as yet naught!" he boasts, smiling broadly.
Gesturing to an unoccupied, but copiously appointed drafting table, he invites all, "pull up a seat and test your mettle, Champions of Toril, the brotherhood awaits eagerly the fruits of your creation."
“Come on, I hate tests...” Omiy sits down grudgingly and murmurs under her breath. She scratches her head, confused with the various tools and materials laid on the table, looks around and when Saddam turns his back, she nudges Hondo and asks hopefully, “hey, can I cheat off yours?”
Omiy will do the best she can as she tries to put something together.
Hondo turns to Omiy, “Believe me, I’m no engineer. Yours will probably good as mine. But I’ve had had to jury rig a few...devices in my time, so we might have a chance. Huarache is an Artificer though, so he’s probably our best bet into the guild.”
Huarache steps forward. "Can it be something we've already built? I have something of a portfolio, so to speak." He uses his All-Purpose Tool to cast Thaumaturgy to increase the volume of a very loud whistle. Echo bounds into the room from outside as Huarache stows the tool and pulls out his Spyglass, and he can show off his Sun Blade if need be, although it isn't as much cred-worthy, considering that he built it with another person's directions. Additionally, he can show off his magically-reloading gun.
Leann stands back from the table. "That is not for me." She explains shaking her head at the offered chair. She would stand guard as the others try their hands at engineering.
"You're right, if someone can get in, it'd probably be Huarache." Omiy says, before she waves at Gearbox and gestures him to come over. She waves her hand for him to lower his head, she puts her month close to where she thinks the monodrone's ear would be, and quietly asks in a low voice, "do you know what Saddam likes to see?"
Gearbox waxes philosophic, as he is prone to doing at the hint if an invitation: "Imagination, creativity, that is the fundamental purpose of this exercise, to take the raw primordial chaos of infinite possibility and shape it into something with purpose, precision and enduring form. Just look within yourself to find the seed of order and the ideas will crystalize around that seed and grow, like a glorious fractal snowflake!" Let it not be said that modrons lack passion.
Ooc: Just tell me something you want and you can literally just have it. I keep hearing requests for magic items and your are now in the nexus of magic item creation, producing goods of incomparable quality for free. I actually encourage homebrew, even original items and they can possess multiple properties. You'll still have to 'make' the item, but if you can't succeed, the NPCs will help. Also, these are no cost items, so just name them. One of you will probably end up impressing them enough to join. It's all a single Int (investigation) check. It doesn't effect gaining the item, just joining the Hands of Time. It can be canonically 'rare' or rare for our purposes, but hopefully interesting and sticking ideally to the mechano-magical theme which in no way hinders the (game)-mechanical properties of the item. These are 'real' magic items. You will keep them (unless they are comically broken, in which case they might end up just plain broken)
Saddam's eyes light up at the sight of Echo. This mechanical marvel is very much his cup of tea, "Most impressive," he says to Huarache, recognizing him as Echo's master, "but it is one matter to own something or even to build it, but to design and engineer it yourself, that is the test we set before our prospective members. Please, my feline friend, find use of the implements and resources at your disposal here. I think you'll find that we have more materials than you could dream of back on Toril." He walks over to a storage shelf and removes what appears to be a small log, "like this, for instance."
Gearbox explains the nature of the object: "On Oerth, Bronzewood trees can grow 40 feet in height, although they take many decades to mature. Their branches grow from the trunk at 45 degree angles. The leaves of the bronzewood are narrow and toothed, about eight to ten inches in length; the bark is reddish-brown and very hard. The wood is very difficult to work with, but it can be used by experts to create weapons as strong as metal, but as light as wood. Saint Cuthbert's cudgel is said to be made from bronzewood."
OOC: Feel free to use any of these materials as well. Be creative, make your own, harvest monster parts, you name it. (also, Oerthians in the party would know Bronzewood, but Saddam is from Toril and assumes the party is as well, for the time being."

Omiy knows what she wants! She’s going to attempt to build a helm of teleportation. She had seen it back at the monastery, and taking some inspiration from the crown of the kraken she can probably put something together.
And there’s enough materials here maybe she can tinker her +1 sword into a +2. If bronzewood makes swords light as wood does that mean dual-wield greatsword is possible?

Huarache will attempt to build a Duskcrusher (EGtW) with the resources he has (Investigation: 19 with Flash of Genius), replacing the traditional symbol of Pelor with that of Gond.

Hondo looks around at his materials. “Hmm...what would they impressed by?” Hondo decides that he will build “Aragon’s Fang” (Homebrew) Investigation: 21
Omiy giggles with her new helmet on, proud of her invention, she sits on the table while connecting a chain using interlock pieces of mithral and bronzewood idly, “if I was this smart in wizard school, I wouldn’t get kicked out. I wish my dad can see... well maybe I can show him. I’ll teleport in front of him, throw him a finger, then teleport back. What do you think?” She asks Gearbox.

*Guild will probably be less than impressed by Hondo’s weapon.*
Huarache looks over at Hondo's work. "Reverse the inputs of those components there, and add a bit of isopropyl at the connectors," he mutters. Add +5 to your roll (Flash of Genius).

"Maybe somebody should see if they can join the guild. If we do find Kwalish's lab, and he was a member, it might help if we had one too."
“Alright,” Omiy rolls up her sleeves getting ready for business, “who do I talk to about joining the guild?”

Behind his back, Gearbox silently rolls his eye.

Wow Omiy is acing it.
Yes! but I'm allowing one item per person at this time. Excellent roll, btw.
Sam will think back to the time of his battle with the lich and will try to build a black dragons scail mail
investigation: 19
And as a customs cut he will use some raptor claws around the shoulders and on where it would cover some claws with draconic ruins on
Omiy and Sam are clearly impressing the guild with their helm of teleportation and black dragon scale mail, respectively.
