Loren is quite cold by the time he climbs up behind the chest on the rope, but is able to get it up to the main floor without mishap. It was quite heavy, very old, and made of wood. There was nothing else to be found in the cubby that the chest came out of.
@ Joshua - Nothing is found of interest about the pillar. It appears the Nothic was only using it as cover.
The chest is unlocked and Loren notes no traps that he can find. It contains 160 sp, 120 gp, five malachite gems, two vials of liquid, a rolled parchment and a longsword in a Silver Chased Scabbard.
(also this earns the group 450 xp to be divided among the party)
"Should we go back for the bodies? They might need a burial..." Loren says this with a frown, the voice of his old schoolteacher echoing in his ears about what the right thing to do is, but not relishing the thought of another delve into the cold, dank ravine.
"From my perspective, their spirits have departed, and what remains is of no consequence to the eternal nature of things. In a way, they are already buried anyway. Perhaps once our task here is done, there may be time later, if it is important to others."
Sheyla puts her hand to her chest and gives a small gasp at Velshir's comment. "We most certainly must take care of the bodies... By that I mean, when we are done here clearing out the dangers we will alert the proper authorities and they can arrange to have them looked after. It will give closure to the family and allow the spirits to rest."
Loren frowns, wrapping his mind around his elder's more spiritual approaches to the matter of looting and body disposal. A moment more, and he is satisfied with the result, having reached peace with himself. For fun, he tries to pocket one of the vials in an obvious way, that might get him in trouble with those watching, while at the same time grabbing two of the malachite gems, intrigued by their unusual coloration and appearance.
Velshir ignores Loren's antics and the discovered materials in general. He recalls the scimitar he took from a slain goblin, and selling it later for a good price. He can feel the weight of the gold pieces in his pouch. He reflects that some amount of money is useful for accomplishing certain things, navigating through a society, but otherwise he's just not interested in possessions or wealth.
Here is a full map of the Cavern. You are currently in the bottom half of the cavern so this is as far as you can see. (I added the top left as it was easier to clip that way, but it will be apparent as you get close to the northern bridge). You've determined that the southern bridge will not support anyone across, or at least not with their gear. Its been estimated to support only about 50 lbs. The top opens up more, but I will add as you get closer.
Loren is carrying two of the gems and a vial of liquid. There remains the coins (160 sp, 120 gp), 3 gemstones, a roll of parchment, a vial of liquid and a longsword in an elegant scabbard in the chest. (as DM is only a referee-type figure, I'm leaving treasure sorting to your own discussions in the thread as to how you'd like to do this. I only need to know who's carrying)
I have present marching order as - Velshir, Loren, Joshua, Lymbryl, Sheyla, Unthir (assuming that Lymbryl is back in position and only moved forward due to his resistance to the Nothic)
@loren
Wasn't sure if the gemstones were being gathered stealthily but as I gave a count, it would be obvious. Message me or use spoilers if you'd like me to treat it as a stealthy move.
Velshir is ready to proceed once the spoils are examined and distributed. He would favor heading north, as it feels like that is the direction that leads deeper into this place.
Unthir patted down the flames and collected his macabre treasures before returning to the group to head North...
With the nothic dispatched, he watched Velshir lower Loren into a hole as Joshua looked about the cave. He was calm; defeating the monster brought a bit of satisfaction.
""Found something!..."
He snapped to this new discovery thinking, "A reward! Marvelous! Truly we are acting with good intentions." He stood and marveled at Loren's find, making a move for one of the vials but then drew the hand back...
"Should we go back for the bodies?"
There it was again. The consistent reminder that rewards found in caves came from blood. The discussion of what to do with the corpses casually took place as he sat in silence. He settled into leaving them there, in the dark, alone, till we had the time to deal with them. He stayed at the back of the group, hoping his hesitation conveyed some sense of infinite regret that he couldn't do more for them.
Is anyone carrying the remainder of the treasure or is it left behind? There remains the coins (160 sp, 120 gp), 3 gemstones, a vial of liquid and a longsword in an elegant scabbard in the chest.
Sheylatook the parchment. Sheyla see spoiler below.
Without opening you can determine that it is magical in some way by markings on the outside. A scroll perhaps. The vials of liquid - although you didn't take, remind you of the healing potions you can make through your herbalism skills.
Lorenis carrying two of the gems and a vial of liquid. Loren see spoiler below
The gems are malachite (15 g ea), the vial maybe a potion of some sort - you think you've seen a similar one sold in the trading posts.
As anyone proceeds north of the cavern, this is what you see -
This area is the north end of a large natural cavern, but it has been finished with dressed stone block walls and a flagstone floor. Several barrels are stored against the walls here, along with a number of empty crates, straw for packing, hammers, pry bars, and nails.
Velshir pulls it up! That little guy is clever to know to look down there, he supposes.
Loren hangs on to the climbing chest, using his feet to keep it from crashing into the side of the ravine.
Velshir says,
"Nice going, Loren. I think you should be the one to open the chest and see what spoils you've found."
"Righty-O."
Thieves tools at the ready! : 24

(Ok! Noted for the future. Loren agrees with Velshir's choice in direction.)
Sheyla would take the parchment if able but other wise would be ready to follow along with the other. Which ever direction they choose would due.
