The OP is correct in noting the issue with the wording, even though the example immediately following it is in conflict.
"A pronoun is used in place of a noun, so the pronoun you choose should match the noun it replaces, regardless of any adjectives describing it." Thus the word 'them' below refers to the antecedent, 'spent Hit Dice' and not simply Hit Dice'".
"At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total number of them(minimum of one die). For example, if a character has eight Hit Dice, he or she can regain four spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest."
(As another example, how about "The big red apples looked delicious so I ate them.")
In any event, the point is moot in the 2024 rules since you get all spent Hit Dice back following a long rest.
