The gunsmith segment of the gunslinger subclass reads:
“Upon choosing this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Tinker’s Tools. You may use them to craft ammunition at half the cost, repair damaged firearms, or even draft and create new ones (DM’s discretion). Some extremely experimental and intricate firearms are only available through crafting.”
Does this only encompass the guns on the firearms table, or is this giving me leeway to homebrew balanced firearms at the discretion of my DM?
In short, it is giving you leeway. But then, you can always create anything with a DM's permission. So, it's kind of giving you something you already had.
Worth noting that the gunslinger is basically a homebrew. It, as far as I know, has not appeared in print in any book. It was added to dndbeyond when it was a separate company from WotC, because the previous owners had a partnership with Critical Role. It pre-dates the inclusion of guns in the PHB. I've not looked to see how well it works with those guns, as opposed to the ones that appear in the subclass description. So, it's worth checking with your DM to be sure the subclass is allowed as a baseline, before you start trying to homebrew a new item. And then figuring out which guns might be available for use.

Thanks, sorry if this is a stupid question
