New to d&d. Me and my friends have been playing starfinder for a while, a couple of the guys in the group have played other systems as well. We're doing a d&d one shot around Christmas time, and I trying to start figuring stuff out and working on a build. Can anyone give me a crash course in d&d's weapon properties? And on a side note, are there any good free d&d rules resources out there? PDFs etc.? Don't want to pay $60 (pardon me, $59.99 for the player's guide), but going in blind isn't how I roll. *Rimshot*
Weapons in 2024 D&D can have two “properties”. The first is general weapon type properties. Examples are Heavy, Light, and Loading. Then each weapon has an associated weapon mastery property.
Anyone picking up a weapon and trying to use it has to deal with any general property the weapon has.
Only characters that have a class granted weapon mastery class trait can use a weapon’s mastery property.

There are already free D&D rules on DDB for the 2024 edition/revision. For example, this link is for Mastery Properties: Equipment - Free Rules - Dungeons & Dragons - Sources - D&D Beyond
The article Your Guide to Weapon Mastery in the 2024 Player's Handbook is also a great introduction to Weapon Mastery.
