I remember seeing a sage advice with Jeremy Crawford awhile back regarding two handed weapons. Is it possible to hold a greatsword in one hand, pull out and throw a handaxe, and return your hand to the greatsword in one turn? I can't seem to find the sage advice regarding it.
In a similar way I have in my group a Warlock that uses a two-handed weapon but casts spells like Hex or eldritch blast. Thematically it isn't hard to believe that he can shift the weapon to one hand while he grabs his components to cast the spell, however the RAW seems unclear about it. Also, for the rule lawyers, would a versatile weapon allow this when maybe a two-handed would not?
The RAW only states that two-handed weapons require both hands to use. Nothing to say you can't carry it or hold it propped against the ground with one hand, while doing something else (casting spell, throwing another weapon, chugging ale) with the free hand.
Seems like this is a DM call within your campaign. "Can I do this?" "Well, explain how you would do it." And if they have a good (or cool or fun) explanation, sure, they can do it. If not, maybe they need an athletics check or something to see if they can do it without dropping the two-handed weapon. Maybe they have to give up their movement to perform this action. Maybe they can only do it at a distance because doing it in melee means they could potentially stab someone while they try to manage their giant sword. I probably wouldn't simply allow them to do it because they chose the two-handed weapon for a reason (added damage) and if they want to use two weapons, there's already a mechanic for that.
I believe the exact wording is "Two-Handed. This weapon requires two hands when you attack with it." So as per RAW it seems the only time on your turn you are required to have 2 hands on the weapon is during the attack.
I think it was in sage advice where they stated that yes you only have to use both hands when actually attacking with a two handed weapon. You can hold it with one hand to perform some other action then put the 2nd hand back on to attack.

I am one with the Force. The Force is with me.
