New subclasses for the following classes: Barbarian: Path of the Ancestral Guardian Bard: College of Swords Fighter: Arcane Archer Monk: Way of the Kensei Sorcerer: Favored Soul
So this iteration of these are mostly in a state that they should recieve publication- with the exception of the Arcane Archer, who might need to be looked at for being a little too strong... the +1 static bonus from Magic Arrow is a little troublesome when added to other standard archery-related stuff, +3 from mid level prof bonus (goign up to +6 at max level), +5 from Dex, +2 from archery style, +1 from magic arrow, potentially +1 to +3 from a magic bow and you have +12 to +17 to hit- which is a lot and comboes with the sharshooter to make a very consistent damage output... it could be a good thing if it isn't too much, can someone with better math skills than me do a DPR comparison to identify if it's actually too strong?
Outside of that, the Kensai they have published here is growing on me the more I realize about the design's subtle beauty and the concepts it enables- one of which involves the ability to take longsword (neither heavy nor special) as a kensai weapon so the martial arts feature lets you use it with dex- providing you a ready-made dex katana for someone that wants to build a agile wanderign samurai esque character ala Kenshin Himura, and offers people that like to be equally good at a bunch of different weapons an option for that too.
Ancestral Barbarian is a 4e style defender subclass (with a mark and mark punishment to boot!) that needs to be published badly along with the knight, it's also incredibly flavorful, a tribal warrior that can commune with and command the spirits in battle- I want one now.
This version of Favored Soul is excellent as well, letting you pilfer some of the cleric list without beign too strong, bringing back the wings everyone seems to want so much, and offers you a sorcerer that at once has a unique niche (healing) but isn't cosntraiend to it, it would be very hard for them to do better than this.
College of Swords is really neat as well, giving us a Bard subclass that's martial in a different way than the Valor Bard (whom it was originally to similar to) with style and strength, without having too much of it- I'm glad that it gives you options for using bardic inspiration on yourself as well, as whole it plays differently than other bards, and looks like a great deal of fun.
I really enjoy that they cleaned up Kensei Monk. The mechanics were a little wonky in the first iteration. I am a bit sad that they removed heavy weapons (minus longbow) from being kensei weapons, but I totally understand that it might have overshadowed certain capabilities of traditional Barbarians and Fighters. Overall, they did a great job of streamlining it while keeping the cool weapon monk feel.
Arcane Archer is fine and compares well to a Battlemaster. Kensai loses its previous GWM builds, but gains new ranged prowess in exchange. Its melee abilities are better anyway in my opinion. Ancestral Barb is much better. Direct and flavorful. Favored Soul really just focuses on healing now and is still lags behind the Theurge, but that's just par for the course. Sorcerer is better as multiclass fuel anyway by being a Charisma caster. College of Swords doesn't interact with TWF well at all, and it isn't really all that different from Valor.
The one that has me thinking the most is Ancestral Barbarian. Currently running Eberron and that would be an amazing subclass with a Valenar Elf. It fits them beautifully.
The Kensai is the subclass for a monk Harper I played in a oneshot game. I was kind of doing what this class offers. Only it would be so much more effective and easier.
The Arcane archer is good. It's pretty much where I want it to be. Nice array of options for it.
College of Swords looks fun.
Flavored Soul has potential as a good healing option for parties. Especially with the ability to spend sorcery points to reroll some/all the dice on a healing.

I agree wholeheartedly. I really want to try ALL of these (with the exception of Arcane Archer, because I've already done that in 3e).
Sword Bard + Battle Master Fighter seems like it would make the best Warlord-type character (an underrated class I'm sad they didn't bring over from 4e); the amount of battlefield control that you'd have could be ridiculous (in a good way).

and honestly it looks pretty tasty.
Seriously though, these are all vastly improved. The only problem I have is, as mentioned above, the arcane archer's whole +1 arrows at all time. That could get absurdly powerful, but at least it stays as a flat +1.

It really won't. It serves its purpose as a non-scaling way to get magical damage at lower levels (both a mechanical benefit for the Archer and thematic sense). It also provides a different style to your average Sharpshooter Battlemaster.
I'm really hoping they publish the Arcane Archer close to this. One of my next characters is going to be a Sharpshooter feat user and I'll take all the attack bonuses I can get,.

Favored soul looks really fantastic. Also from the roleplaying perspective.

I really, really like the Arcane Archer and would like to point out that the Magic Arrow feature doesn't stack with plain, ordinary magic arrows.
