Hi everyone, been asking around but haven't been able to get any answers to this, so I figured I'd try here.
So the Grave domain gives it's clerics a power called Eyes of the Grave, which functions similar to a rangers primeval awareness, though the wording is a little unique
Starting at 1st level, you gain an innate sense of creatures whose existence is an insult to the natural cycle of life. If you spend 1 minute in uninterrupted contemplation, you can determine the presence and nature of undead creatures in the area. This detection extends up to 1 mile in all directions. You learn the number of undead and their distance and direction from you. In addition, you learn the creature type of the undead in that area that has the highest challenge rating. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
My question is, would the creature type be Undead? With the exception of figuring out it was a vampire (because they are undead (shapechanger) ) is there any point for that wording?
Technically, yes, the type of the creature is undead, but that seems fairly pointless, as the ability only allows the detection of undead.
Given it says, "you learn the creature type of the undead in that area that has the highest challenge rating" I am fairly sure that the intent is to reveal the monster name for the most powerful undead. They probably wrote monster type, rather than name because powerful undead often have a specific name, such as "Count Dracula" and the ability would just reveal "Vampire"
