Jeremy Crawford has stated that the PH Ranger is the final version of the class, and rather than publish a separate new version there will be alternative swappable features. In other words, once UA Ranger finishes playtesting, it won't be a separate class but its features will be available piecemeal for standard Rangers.
I think my main question is that, if this is just the swapping of abilities on the PHB ranger, if the alternate features will count as your +1 (as in PHB+1) for Adventurers League or if they'll count as part of the PHB and still allow another +1. For example, can I use the alternate features and still play a Monster Slayer ranger?

The "PHB +1" rule was always going to eventually come to be at odds with the amount of splat books that WotC will churn out over the course of 5th ed's life-cycle. I suspect that there will be a time in the near future where they might have to adjust the rule to "PHB+2" or just ditch it altogether. Otherwise people won't get to mix and match Volo's races with Xanathar's class options and/or other stuff like Elemental Evils or ToA (and Tortel Package) backgrounds.

If there are any updates to the Ranger, they will most likely come out as some sort of sub-class options in a book that will be part of the +1. The only time I can think of so far that WotC has amended its rule of "PHB +1" is when they said that the Tortel Package counted as part of ToA as part of ToA's +1.

Maybe the alternate features will only be available to people using the PHB ranger, and the Monster Slayer will be designed / balanced around that assumption?
When he said PHB ranger, he was referring to the class. Not the subclasses.
Pretty sure the alternate features he was talking about were like the improved natural explorer and favored enemy features and any other features separate from subclasses.
I would love to see more alternate features for different classes. That way, we don't have to devote an entire subclass to getting one or two abilities we want.
As for the PHB +1 rule, I imagine most (if not all) of these alternate features will behave something like "here's a list of alternate features we feel the base classes should have had in the PHB. Feel free to use them as if they were in the PHB, and they don't count as a +1." They've said the Ranger ones will be free, so I imagine the rest probably will be, too.
So, we will get a revised ranger, then, it will just not be in the form of a new class, but alternate features? That sounds... ok. Though Beast Master needs to be redone as it was in the Ranger Revised UA. The new one might be weaker mechanically than the other Ranger subclasses, but it is at least playable.
Totally cool with this, as long as it brings Ranger up to snuff. Hopefully they add new "features" to the Way of the Elements Monk, Trickster Domain Cleric, etc.
It seems most of the responses on Twitter are negative.
I actually like the idea.
It makes character creation and integration with subclasses very straightforward.
Pick a Race.
Pick a Class or Alt Class.
Pick a Sub-Class.
The main question I have is how much piece meal can you choose the abilities?
That's a really big question- if it's on a per feature basis the way pathfinder does them, than that would be very interesting- you could make it the current ranger compatible with the new beastmaster by just removing extra attack (since you need coordinated attack), take your pick of the different versions of favored enemy and natural explorer and etc.
What doesn't make any sense is that in Xanathar's Guide to everything, they are including the Gloom Stalker (which is the Deep Stalker), which was added to the REVISED ranger. However, they aren't giving us the Revised Ranger as a class. So, my revised beastmaster ranger has to wait until who knows when before the program becomes useful for me. :(
Considering that Mike Mearls admitted that the Ranger class was so screwed up that they had to scrap the entire thing and start over, im just surprised that they didn't include it with D&D beyond

Anda quick tease that other classes might see similar treatment.

When will we get those alternative features, and in what book(s)? Surely the ranger stuff in Xanathar's is not entirely what Crawford is referring to?
So, when and where will we get these new ranger features?

I don't think the +1 rule will be going away. I just think this could be part of the PHB, not the +1

This sounds like 2nd edition skills and powers to me.

The Deep Stalker was in the "Light, Dark and Underdark" UA article long before the most recent revision to the Ranger was produced.

Interesting concept. Totally wrong solution.
