Hello all! I recently purchased the GuildMaster’s Guide to Ravnica book in real life (a world based off one of the more popular Magic the Gathering sets) and wanted to gauge public interest in running a campaign.
Quick Summary of the Ravnica Setting: Ravnica is a vast sprawling city that covers all the known world. The campaign takes place in District 10, the “core” city that features the headquarters for the 10 guilds, which much of the going on’s of the city and it’s inhabitants revolve around. Although there are guildless mercenaries, independant groups and multi-guild organizations, much of the adventure’s possible routes usually revolves around the raising tensions between the ten guilds, the overt fighting such as riots, police raids, and escaped lab experiments, and the more subtle aspects of conflict such as sabotage, espoinage, etc.
Here’s a quick summary of the ten guilds, if you have any questions or need help understand or choosing you can pm me or look up some of the many online resources available.
All ten guilds are a two color combination of the five primary colors of Magic the Gathering. Although there are “good” and “evil” leaning guilds, there are good characters in some of the more sinister guilds trying to make a change, and corrupted characters in the more reputable guilds.
Azorius Senate (Blue White)- The judges, lawmakers, and police force of Ravnica. They are the core of the law system of Ravnica, and their ultimate goal is to foster the ideal society. Azorius characters usually are law enforcers, beurocratic clerks that accidentally wind up in a situation over their heads, or diplomats.
Boros Legion (Red White)-While it’s primary function is as Ravnica’s army, it’s more common function these days is as a military police force, guarding and responding to threats in the rough parts of Ravnica that the Azorius Senate can’t or won’t.
House Dimir (Blue Black)-Dimir is the first and only of the original ten guilds to have fallen, or at least that’s what they want you to think. Their original function was as librarians and messengers, nowadays they are sleeper agent spies, acting on their mysterious and often unknown masters orders.
Golgari Swarm (Green Black)- The Golgari Swarm’s primary duties are to manage the cities waste, and maintain the underground caverns, aqueducts, sewers, tunnels and other inferstructure that has been long since forgotten by the rest of the city. They have a distinct life and death motife, and are big on fungus and insects.
Gruul Clans (Red Green)- The Gruul are a series of clans that band togeather for a common cause rather then an organization. They were once tasked with maintaining Ravnica’s natural places, but with urban sprawl, now are focused on preserving what little they have, and trying to reclaim the wild, even (especially) if violence and rioting is how.
Izzet League (Red Blue)- Experimenters, scientists, and test subjects, the Izzet League is detonated to researching and discovering new aspects of both science and magic, and maintaining the cities power. They go to any and all lengths, even inhumane experimentation, and can be a eccentric individual’s, with a preference for explosions.
Orzhov Syndicate (White Black)- A Bank, a central and popular religious group, and an shady mafia like organization, although they’ll deny that last part, the Orzhov have a hand in many aspects and businesses all throughout Ravnica, and their thugs, priests and pontiffs, and tithe takers are as fearsome a fighting force as any of the militaristic guilds.
Cult of Rakdos (Red Black)-A group of entertainers lead by a cruel sadistic demon? What could go wrong? The rakdos are the home of many of the cities best leisure activities, weather that be plays, musicals, carnivals, or more sensual pleasures such as whore and drug houses. Nevermind that sometimes that live entertainment ends in participant and sometimes audience death, it’s always a good time!
Selesneya Conclave (Green White)- Harmony between Civilization and Nature, that’s the goal of the Selesneya. They maintain the gardens, pastures, and farms of Ravnica, and their connection to the soul of the world through their guild leaders, a group of dryads connected to the oldest and largest known tree in the world, they welcome all to join and work towards their goals of a peaceful and united world, and maintain their own defensive forces in case they need to defend that goal.
Simic Combine (Blue Green)- Like the Izzet, scientific research is their main goal, but while the Izzet work towards magic and science infrastructure and general research (and often explosive) the Simic instead work towards magical biological research. Combining aspects of sentient races and powerful creatures is one of the more we’ll known of the Simics projects, so much so that most members have some form of genetic alterations to themselves, often becoming semi aquatic to match the water dwelling elves that lead the upper branches of the organization.
In addition to the guilds, there are also additional races and class sub types available to the Ravnica setting, at the cost of some limitations in both. New sub class types of Order Clerics and Spore Druids are detailed in the book, and the Artificer unearthed arcana class while not detailed in the book fits naturally to some of the guilds. Loxodons (biped elephants), Minotaurs, Centaurs, Goblins, and blue skinned Vedelkins are new races to the setting, at the cost of some that don’t appear in the book, but may be retconned in through simic experiments of interplanar traveling such as Dragonborn, Goliath’s, Teiflings, and maybe more that I’m forgetting at the moment.
Due to how flavorful and different the guilds and characters of the Ravnica setting are, there’s many possible adventure routes we could take. My current plan is to gather a group of players intrested, lay out people’s favorite guilds and possible classes, and design a campaign from the bottom up depending on what those interests are. The campaign could feature people from various guilds banding togeather to solve a problem, 2-3 guilds drawing up an alliance against another, or many other possibilities and combinations so don’t feel shy about saying who or what you want to play.
So what I’m asking for is a post showing interest, saying a little bit about yourself, laying out your 3 or so favorite guilds, preferred classes for those guilds, and any other relevant info that you think could help contribute to the campaign. Once I’ve got enough people, I’ll invite us all over to a private chat so we can get a better idea of what to construct togeather, and to answer questions and help build characters.
I am most definitely very interested in joining a Ravnica PbP Campaign! I have access to the digital content for it here on DnD Beyond but have yet to find a campaign making use of it so count me in as one very party.
Just a hands up from for now, I will post here on this thread again to detail more about myself, favorite guilds, and classes etc. as requested when I have bit more time tomorrow. Thank you...
I'm interested, I am currently having fun playing in a few pbp games here on the dndbeyond forums and would love to add another to my list.
My 3 favourite guilds are:
Izzet League
House Dimir
Simic Combine
With runner ups:
Selesneya Conclave
Boros Legion
Azorius Senate
For characters, I have 2 I'm looking to get into new games:
Human (Mark of making): Artificer 1-3, member of the Izzet League, found at an early age with a strange birthmark that allowed him to magically repair things. Looking to get out and adventure to test and perfect his experimental gauntlet design.
Changeling: Druid 2 / Monk 1, re-flavoured so that all of his abilities and spells appear to be apart of his shape shifting. Learned new skills from a primal fox spirit in a dream. Guildless to begin with, but being pursued by: The Simic Combine for his shapeshifting abilities (they want to study him; he may have been one of their experiments); The Selesneya Conclave because of his connection to the primal fox spirit; House Dimir for his infiltration potential;
Of course everything is subject to change, to better fit the world, the story and/or the party.
I've played Magic a LONG time ago for a few years and am quite familiar with the color wheel and all that stuff.
As for playing in it, I don't really have a favorite guild. Listening to the lore they all seem interesting in their own right. As you mentioned the group of players needs to be either from a single guild or a likely alliance of a few guilds, so I'm opting to be a follower of a choice and am certain that I can make an interesting character within the given parameters. Same goes for classes actually, except I never really understood warlocks.. but there will probably never be a situation where I HAVE to choose a warlock. I have played many classes, am playing many classes and have DM'ed a variety of combinations.
While listening to all those reviews and lore segments, the Guildpact seems like a very interesting concept. I thought that a setting where the Guildpact is known to end in about one year would be interesting to play in. But I didn't get any further in planning it out, so I'm just throwing that idea out there :)
I would be more then happy to play. Have the book for ddb but have not got to play in a pbp game with it yet. I am will to play just about anything. But like healers and warlocks for the most part.
I would love to play in a Ravnica PbP Campaign. I had been recently started in a Ravnica game, however it looks like it has folded. In that I had started to play a Golgari Swarm Simic Hybrid Druid of the Circle of Spores, which is a concept I would really like to get back into a give a real go. Having said that my choice of guilds and classes would be:
Three favourite guilds and class choices:
Golgari Swarm Druid - Circle of Spores.
Cult of Rakdos Bard.
Izzet League Warlock.
The character options are as follows:
Golgari Swarm Simic Hybrid Druid of the Circle of Spores.
Cult of Rakdos Teifling Bard. She is a whimsical trickster who has lived on the streets of Ravnica by her own wit since she was a child. Having a flair for entertaining others, she soon gained notice of some within the Cult but refused there offers. As things went sour with a former associate during a heist, she was put into a position where she had to accept the servitude of the Cult or die. She chose to join.
I have not really fleshed out any ideas for the warlock, however I have always wanted to play one!
I would love to get in on this campaign. I’m in 2 other campaigns and post very often. Only know a little about Magic the Gathering ( my son played for a while) but I learn quick.
Guilds of interest:
1. Izzet League
2. Gruul Clans
3. Boros Leagion
I have a high elf sorcerer and a dragonborn fighter in mind. Thanks for any consideration.

Hello all! So there are open slots left in the campaign for new sign ups so please leave a message on here!
We have a group chat set up, and have decided on a Izzet only themed campaign. We have not officially started yet, still ironing out backstories and such. You don’t need to have a character prepared, just need to leave a quick message to show interest. Hope to hear from you all!
Ok then, I’d like to play then. I can play artificer or wizard for this then

Are we ever sure that we exist? Do we have feelings? Or are we just NPC's designed to think highly? If so what is our purpose? Why are we here? Who are the players? Or are there Players?
