Weapon (flail), legendary (requires attunement by a barbarian)

Vrilock is a powerful flail, chiseled by Cult of the Moon from the bones of a now-extinct beast of the desert.

You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. On the first night after killing a creature with Vrilock, the attuned user will be unable to sleep, and will instead be compelled to seek out a view of the night sky. Rather than sleeping, the creature will remain transfixed by the moon until morning. If this process is not interrupted, the user will develop a fear of the indoors, and will only sleep outdoors with an unobstructed view of the sky.

In addition, the wielder will gain the ability to transform into a semi-beast form once per day; this ability is only available when in a raged state. While transformed, the wielder gains the following benefits:

  • Advantage on attack rolls against enemies with less than full hit points
  • Treated as one size larger for the purposes of grappling
  • Climbing speed equal to the wielder's walking speed

While transformed, the wielder will appear as a vicious monster, to the extent that a normal bystander would be frightened and potentially try and attack.

Supernatural Awareness

While you are holding the weapon, it alerts you to the location of any creatures that mean you harm within 30 feet of you.

Sentience

Vrilock is a sentient neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 4, a Wisdom of 14, and a Charisma of 17. It has hearing and tremorsense out to a range of 120 feet.

The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder through a combination of images and impressions. It roars when used in combat.

Personality

Vrilock is inhabited by the spirit of the beast whose bones were carved to form the weapon. As a result, rather than acting fully as a separate intelligence, it tends to meld more closely with its wielder, enhancing any primal aspects present in their personality. For instance, they may have fewer reservations about eating fallen enemies, or become distrustful of man-made structures; however, the wielder is aware of the separate intelligence of the weapon, and can resist this influence.

Proficiency with a flail allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
