A short, thin, straight blade made of folded steel is held by a grip wrapped in gilded, crimson colored deer skin leather. This two foot long blade glints in the light with wavy patterns of dark and light steel along every inch of it. The concave edge grants wonderful flexibility, and ends in a razor-like point that can never dull. The blade has a small, curled cross-guard, just large enough to protect the owner's fingers, with a gilded orb on each side. A fairly large hexagonal pommel decorated with intricate runic carvings adorns the bottom of the handle, and all of the adornments of the blade flow into one another with seamless and exquisite craftsmanship, as expected from such an elegant weapon.
The Blade of Sohlrind possesses a sentience that seeks out and offers power to potential creatures as a Hexblade Warlock Patron through powerful and unknown means, and often those Warlocks that accept such patronage will create weapons for themselves that resemble the beauty and grace of Sohlrind. In addition, the unique blade that is Sohlrind uses its telepathic ability to subtly manipulate other creatures into delivering it into the hands of Warlocks that have accepted it as a Hexblade Patron.
Upon picking up The Blade of Sohlrind, any creature attempting to wield it is immediately judged by the sentience possessing the blade. If it deems its wielder to be worthy of the knowledge and power it possesses it will reveal itself and offer a Pact of the Blade to them, and provided they maintain worthiness will protect them with its arcane power as they protect it.
The Blade of Sohlrind only offers itself to one master at a time, and attuning to the blade requires a special ritual which the blade guides the wielder through. During this ritual the blade asks questions and reads the mind of its wielder to be certain that they are not craven or nefarious. If during this ritual the blade rejects the wielder they must make a Wisdom Saving Throw (DC 18) or suffer disadvantage on all ability checks for a year and a day. If the wielder is accepted by The Blade of Sohlrind, they become attuned to it and are not only granted its patronage and pact abilities, but also the use of its innate arcane abilities. Sohlrind has been known to hide these abilities from its wielder however, until it believes they are ready to wield them.
As a pact weapon The Blade of Sohlrind can take any weapon form as the wielder desires, and is capable of granting a number of special properties while being wielded by the creature attuned to them:
- The Blade of Sohlrind grants their wielder advantage on initiative checks
- When the wielder hits with an attack using The Blade of Sohlrind against a creature that has damage resistance from physical attacks made by this blade the resistance applies as normal, but the blade bursts forth with arcane energy and deals an additional 2d6 force damage
- The Blade of Sohlrind is capable of producing light (as per the Light cantrip) as an action taken by its wielder
- The Blade of Sohlrind grants their wielder the ability to use an action to cast the comprehend languages spell from it at will
Sentience
The Blade of Sohlrind is a sentient neutral good weapon with an Intelligence of 18, a Wisdom of 14, and a Charisma of 10. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet, and is capable of communicating telepathically with the creature attuned to it at any range, even across other planes. This telepathy can also be used on other creatures they can perceive within 120 feet, if that creature has an intelligence of 3 or higher. They also seem to possess extensive knowledge of the arcane arts and thus grants expertise in the Arcana skill to the creature attuned to them.
Personality
The Blade of Sohlrind understands that their ability to affect the world around them is limited by the individual that wields them. They try to use their knowledge and power to the betterment of their wielder, but they prefer to do so in an empowering way rather than finite intervention. As such they will try and guide the individual that wields them towards acts of integrity and merit. They seem to abhor intolerance and react strongly to subjugation.
