Wondrous Item, rare

This pink sapphire was once part of a non-magical set of jewels worn in vanity by an ancient fey necromancer. The set included more than 100 such sapphires, all of which eventually picked up the deathly glamour of their owner. The set was dismantled centuries ago, but many of the stones were not destroyed and they have ended up in the strangest of places. Sometimes the energy in them seeps out into nearby vessels, like a rotting corpse or bleached skeleton.

Any time both a dead creature and a live creature are within 20 feet of a faerie death drop, the dead creature must pass a DC13 saving throw or be reanimated (taking undead form) and attack the living. This occurs only if the dead creature can be reasonably considered "whole": it was not chopped or crushed into multiple pieces. A dead humanoid whose hand had been chopped off might be considered "whole", but not a humanoid who was beheaded or chopped in half. Reanimation occurs only once, and does not apply to undead monsters. If the reanimated creature moves more than 20 feet from the faerie death drop, it loses its animation.

The gem could be sold to a gemstone dealer. Where a normal sapphire brings 1,000gp, the sickly pink color of this one means it's only worth about half that... or if the buyer has interest in necromancy (and sufficient means), much more. Various factions among the fey wish to destroy any death drop they find --- and various necrotic groups would, of course, kill to have them....
