This ring stores spells cast into it, holding them until the attuned wearer uses them. The ring can store up to 5 levels worth of spells at a time. When found, it contains 1d6 − 1 levels of stored spells chosen by the GM.
Any creature can cast a spell of 1st through 5th level into the ring by touching the ring as the spell is cast. The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the ring. If the ring can't hold the spell, the spell is expended without effect. The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses.
While wearing this ring, you can cast any spell stored in it. The spell uses the slot level, spell save DC, spell attack bonus, and spellcasting ability of the original caster, but is otherwise treated as if you cast the spell. The spell cast from the ring is no longer stored in it, freeing up space.
Notes: Buff, Utility, Jewelry
Can you cast a spell from the ring into the ring?
If I wanted to, could I place a 2nd level Cure Wounds in there, or are you not allowed to upcast spells?
If someone found a ring of spell storing with spells in it do they need to know what spell theyre trying to cast or can they just "activate" the ring and cast a spell from it and hope its a good spell? For example if the ring contained a cure wounds spell but the party didnt know what spell was in the ring could they attempt to cast it in combat targeting an enemy and accidentally healing them or would they need to say they are casting cure wounds from their ring?
so... this is next to useless for level 6 warlocks who are casting at level 3 all the time.
it could only hold one spell.. (holding a spell at 3rd level), the next spell the warlock casts would also be at level 3... but the ring can't hold it so the spell is expended without effect, or does it at least store the first two levels of the spell?
What if you had two rings attuned... and stored a level 5 spell in each.. then used both rings to cast them, but was touching the rings, would the rings simply swap spells?
..... ok so hear me out on this...
2 druids, one elemental, one more animal shape shifter... each have a ring of spell storing that the other is attuned to.
they touch rings via their fists and cast their shape shifting spells into the rings and say "Wonder Twin Powers, activate"... and take the form/shape of whatever the other casted into the ring.
So with this description of the Spell do i ahve to roll the 1d6-1 and whatever the number is thats how many spells its store? just wanted to make sure i am reading this correctly
It can always hold 5 levels of spells. The roll is only to see how many levels are currently stored in the ring when you find it.
Nope, because you're starting from a faulty position: Per the DMG, Ch 7 (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/treasure#Attunement), you can not attune to 2 copies of the same item.
Or, you have someone else cast the spells for those 2 remaining open levels. Unused racial or feat spells also look like a good option, if available.
It wouldn't make any sense for it to require verbal and somatic components, because a user who doesn't know the spell wouldn't know them.

Here's a question: Say a caster has an Arcane Grimoire +2, and uses it to cast a Chromatic Orb into the ring. If the ring is handed off to someone else and they cast the Chromatic Orb, I'm assuming that the +2 for the Grimoire still applies - since it was used to cast the spell originally. Seems obvious. What do you think?
I will say, though, that using Find Familiar in the ring to give familiars to characters who can't normally cast that spell seems kind of broken. There's no reason that a whole party couldn't have familiars for life that way!
I would say it snapshots bonuses to attack rolls/save DCs like that.
And yea, the item allows shenanigans with spells like find familiar and find steed. No concentration and unlimited duration. If a bard learns find greater steed with magical secrets everyone can have a pegasus pretty early.
Ironically despite being a spellcasting focused item it is best in the hands of non-casters. Best in combat usage is letting the fighter concentrate on a spell for you while the casters concentrate on another.
Curious why under either notes and/or item tags an entry for college/school of magic is not given. What would Detect Magic show?
Ring of Even More Uses Of Silvery Barbs.
Before each long rest, the wizard uses unused slots to fill it up with Shield, either for himself or one of the other casters.
So, any druid or ranger (or bard, I guess) can potentially live forever with this thing if they learn Reincarnate and find a buddy that'd be willing to cast the spell on them within ten days once they die of old age.
Man, liches wish they'd have thought of that lifehack.
I have never seen so many people not read a spell and ask a question that's clearly answered in the spell description before. Like holy hell read the spell description.
What God/goddess would be able to give this to my character
