posted a message on New to Warlock - Overwhelmed by Optimization but want to avoid mistakes so I have some questions..

I like my HexBlade because he can do decent damage to single target, and if I "waste" my spellslots I can do some nifty area damage as well. And lets not forget all the movement spells which helps you move across the battleboard. And the best damage cantrip in the game Eldritch Blast makes my character do good on ranged as well, (Especially with the right feats and invocations the range of the EB is unchallenged by any class). Out of combat, with the right invocations and skills, and the high charisma, the options for roleplaying your way through the world are immense.

What it boils down to is how well you mix the feats and invocations with the spells you choose. AND the most important part of being a warlock, how strict/nice your DM is towards the short rest rule. Some tend to not give that many short rests due to the fact that most classes mainly needs long rests to "reset" their abilities, so the warlocks are almost punished if your DM doesnt follow this up and help you play your class.

How are your starting stats so high?

Mine was even better on my warlock and I was lucky on my roll.

We have always rolled on my group, makes it more fun and random

with a glaive, don't you want a higher strength score, since that's a heavy weapon?

Pact of the Blade (any melee weapon) + Hex Warrior (CHA for ATK/DMG) negates that need.

As Sillvva said, as a HexBlade you get your Cha modifier instead. Which is awesome for a bladelock with melee preferences. Especially at the lower levels, since your Glaive counts as a +1 magic weapon.

Good work!  Hopefully you will do a more indepth one on the warlock as you mentioned. Very good reading for new players to the class!

For one attack yes. But a im guessing the average damage of a bladelock polearm master with sentinel is higher then that of a Shillelagh/Green Flame Blade toy soldier. Especially after lvl 6 when you get your second attack.

I have a Tiefling Pact of the Tome Celestial Warlock, that is very successful.
I run him almost like a Paladin.  I took Shillelagh as a Tome cantrip and Green Flame Blade in melee or Fire Bolt/Sacred Flame at ranged.

At 4th lvl I took Flame of Phlegathos, so now every 1 I roll with every fire spell is rerolled and anyone who strikes me in melee takes an additional 1d4 fire from it.

a bonus action Shillelagh makes my quarterstaff now attack/damage with Charisma because it's a Warlock spell due to how Pact of the Tome is worded.
Green Flame Blade works with Flame of Phlegathos and Shillelagh and Radiant Soul to be quite powerful, it means your Pact of the Tome is hitting like a Pact of the Blade.

I use Fire or Radiant instead of Eldritch Blast, although I keep that spell "just in case"

Not in round 1 of combat he isnt. If you need time to spell up to be able to hit as a BladeLock, you arent hitting like a BladeLock, but not far behind a BladeLock. Big difference.

Haha, this made my day :D

For the record; You cant expect a feat to work or help you all the time. Most feats are situational, especially some of the fighting feats.

Forgot to add the quote the other day:

    Spell Slots

The Warlock table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your warlock spells of 1st through 5th level. The table also shows what the level of those slots is; all of your spell slots are the same level. To cast one of your warlock spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a spell slot. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a short or long rest.

For example, when you are 5th level, you have two 3rd-level spell slots. To cast the 1st-level spell witch bolt, you must spend one of those slots, and you cast it as a 3rd-level spell.

Thats not the invocation, its that you gained level. As you gain more levels all your spells are pushed upwards casting wise.

Might the reason be the equipment "slot" they occupy?

Maybe i'll multi-class as a Lock/Lock and do both. Ha!

Cant multiclass into the same class. So you are stuck with the path you chose as a warlock.

I've got 2 Warlocks I've built up - a melee Hexblade that I started from scratch, and a Celestial I made as a backup.

Ash, the Teifling Hexblade, is very melee focused. She uses EB only when she's out of combat range, and has used Misty Step to get into range. She much prefers to go in with her Raven Queen-granted Pact Katana, using Hex or Hexblade's Curse, and going for an Eldritch Smite or Branding Smite - hopefully on a Crit. Ashkara'a

You forgot to mention that your DM has been incredible nice and given you a weapon with almost artifactlevel power, a weapon that replenishes your spells per day when you get a kill. That tactic with misty stepping close and smiting during every combat is hard without a overpowered weapon like that.

    Skamos Valchar

Thats my Tiefling HexBlade. He butts around with his Glaive (heh) and I really enjoy playing him. Going for Sentinel as the next feat. Awesome to play both in and out of combat.
