We're playing sci-fi D&D in an alt-history modern day. We also deal with modern-day issues, mostly my take on the culture war, but PCs and NPCs belong to real-world religions.
One of my favorite NPCs is a Coptic Christian missionary. He is optimistic, wise and level-headed.
Since there are guns, everyone is hesitant to start shooting [and thereby murdering or dying] so most fights are with fists, or using subdual damage with melee weapons at worst.
Aiming a ranged attack is more difficult when a foe is next to you. When you make a ranged attack with a weapon, a spell, or some other means, you have disadvantage on the attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature who can see you and who isn't incapacitated.
Opportunity Attacks
You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach. To make the opportunity attack, you use your reaction to make one melee attack against the provoking creature. The attack occurs right before the creature leaves your reach.
You can avoid provoking an opportunity attack by taking the Disengage action. You also don't provoke an opportunity attack when you teleport or when someone or something moves you without using your movement, action, or reaction. For example, you don't provoke an opportunity attack if an explosion hurls you out of a foe's reach or if gravity causes you to fall past an enemy.
[Spellcasting] Attack Rolls
Some spells require the caster to make an attack roll to determine whether the spell effect hits the intended target. Your attack bonus with a spell attack equals your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus.
Most spells that require attack rolls involve ranged attacks. Remember that you have disadvantage on a ranged attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature that can see you and that isn't incapacitated (see chapter 9).
Evil has a religious element too. Maybe he starts praying to an evil deity, strikes a deal with a devil, suggests that the party start doing business with an evil cult.
My plate-mailed fighter had to fight a black pudding. His flail got dissolved, so the DM and I agreed that my PC could remove his helmet and use it as an improvised weapon. My AC went down by 1 while it was in my hand instead of on my head, though.
In my modern-day game rules, a helmet absorbs the first critical hit on a target.
I would argue to my DM that my helmet would provide protection from either a fall, or some kind of assassin's shot with a ranged weapon.
Maybe adding a helmet to an armor that doesn't normally include one could add 1 to its AC?

I lined two 3/4" video tape cases with foam. This is how my minis look after 20 years - pretty good.
I'm passing them on, BTW!

Basic game + all expansions can be yours.
Talisman 3rd got me back into boardgaming after I became a firm D&Der. It really makes for a great evening.
