Description

It is rare that any adventurer would encounter a lost dragon like the pink dragon. They are few in number, but mighty in power. In order for a pink dragon to be born; the unlikely union of a red and white dragon must occur. This is doubly rare, not only because these two dragons lair in completely opposing climates and therefore, it is reasonable to assume that they may never encounter each other, but also because Chromatic dragons are incredibly self-centred and find all other forms of dragon, even those of different scale colours to be beneath them. If a white and red dragon do mate however, their offspring will inherit traits of both and will grow to become an incredibly deadly monster in its own right.

A pink dragon has wisdom and intelligence behind its eyes, more like it's red dragon parent, great spined horns form a crown around its head and a leathery crest runs the length of its body, terminating in a paddle-like tail which it uses to aid in swimming. The scales of a wyrmling pink dragon are fleshy and pale, often showing its blood vessels and veins through its skin, their eyes are opaque black voids to assist in the darkness of its cavernous habitat. As the dragon ages, its scales become tougher and more vibrant in colour as its need to hide in the darkness of their lairs becomes less necessary, and the attitude of the predator grows within its heart.

Mind of a Hunter. Pink dragons are more cunning and tactical than their white dragon parent, but still have a bestial lust for hunting. A pink dragon consumes only food that has been boiled to death, devouring creatures killed by its breath weapon as their flesh softly melts away from their bones, their skin degloving from their muscles while they writhe in agony. It litters its lair with the clean bones of its victims, taking pride in pristine skeletons which it needed to damage very little in combat, being instead burned to death quickly by its steam breath.

A pink dragon also keeps the bodies of its greatest enemies as trophies, hanging their bones from stalactites and stalagmites in its cavernous nests, where it can look upon them and gloat. The remains of dire jungle cats, exoskeletons of enormous insects and wandering heroes are often positioned prominently within a pink dragon’s lair as warnings to intruders.

Pink dragons don't have quite the perfect memories of their white dragon parents, but they hold on to certain precious memories in absurd detail. this is an honour they mostly reserve for great meals and epic battles.

A conquerer's hoard. White dragons hoard treasure, just like Red dragons; including gold coins which are said to glitter like stars in their frozen lairs, embedded in the layers of ice. They collect broken parts of ships and trophy-like bones of their victims. With their photographic and perfect memories, they remember every moment of their lives as if it is happening right now, so they relive every single coin’s acquisition, every slaughtered foe and so on, with as much clarity as the moment in which it occurred. They also, love to heard diamonds due to their beautiful similarities to perfect crystals of ice.
Red Dragons are the most famous gold and treasure hoarders in D&D, obsessively amassing value in any form they can find, with a particular fondness for gold and gemstones.
So, we can safely assume that a pink dragon would hoard much the same thing! Gold, treasure of all kinds and in particular, shiny gemstones; prioritising those of greater value over those of greater size or clarity, perhaps unlike their white dragon parents. But value, gold, and in particular, gemstones seem like a good fit.
Maybe the bones of rare creatures they have helped to hunt to extinction, picked clean as the boiling heat of their breath draws the meat of these creatures from their skeletons.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Pink Dragon’s Lair

Pink dragons lair in damp and humid caves and deep subterranean chambers far from the sun. They favor high mountain vales accessible only by flying, caverns in cliff faces, and labyrinthine caves in rain forests and jungles. Pink dragons love vertical heights in their caverns, flying up to nest on mesa-like stalagmites overlooking their vast hordes of gold and bones.

A legendary pink dragon’s innate magic deepens the humidity in the area around its lair. Mountain caverns are converted into oppressively sauna-like networks of hot-springs and overgrown with pre-historic looking ferns due to the pink dragon’s presence. A pink dragon can often detect intruders by the smell of sweat and fear given off by their sweltering prey as they traverse its habitat.

A pink dragon rests on high stone shelves and cliffs in its lair, the floor around it a seething pool of ever bubbling water, hidden pits, and slippery slopes. As foes struggle to move toward it, the dragon flies from perch to perch and destroys them with its boiling breath.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • A boiling geyser erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-radius pillar of boiling water. Each creature in the geyser’s area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Jagged stalactites fall from the ceiling, striking up to three creatures underneath that the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The dragon makes one ranged attack roll (+7 to hit) against each target. On a hit, the target takes 10 (3d6) piercing damage.
  • Boiling steam and fog fills a 20-foot-radius sphere centred on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The fog spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. Each creature in the fog when it appears must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw, taking 10 (3d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that ends its turn in the fog takes 10 (3d6) fire damage. A wind of at least 20 miles per hour disperses the fog. The fog otherwise lasts until the dragon uses this lair action again or until the dragon dies.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary white dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • A humid mist lightly obscures the land within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair.
  • The extreme heat and moisture cause all plant life within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair to grow abnormally large very quickly, attracting many creatures who would be at home in a jungle, like mosquitos and other large insects to be drawn to the area.
  • Great and boiling natural baths block off areas in the dragon’s lair, some being as deep as 60 feet and seethingly hot to the touch. Characters who attempt to swim through these pools count as affected by the heat metal spell.
If the dragon wishes to move through a pool, it can do so without slowing down.

If the dragon dies, the mist and geysers fade within 1 day. The jungle of ferns and other supernaturally large plants die out over the course of 1d10 days.
