Description
You investigate the dark corridor with candle in hand, trying to locate the source of cold around you. Suddenly the candle begins to heat up in your hand, and sparks of flame shoot out to catch your hair. The candle jumps down onto the floor, leaving dribbles of wax behind as it quickly runs out of your grasp, burning your fingers in the process.
Living String. Wickwalks are long pieces of a string-like material, similar to braided cotton, that were given sentience through their proximity to arcane energy. Not able to generate heat on their own, they desire it. and seek out ways to surround themselves with it. They gather wax from the dregs of candles to coat themselves with, and then pretend to be candles in order to stay near fire.
Uninvited Guests. Many homes contain wickwalks without realizing it. These creatures hide themselves in the workplaces of candlemakers, and when within a home do all within their power to remain, recoating themselves in leftover wax from other burnings to last far longer than any candle should.
They feed off of heat and fire, draining it from the air around them, which can lead to unexplained pockets of cold within the homes they inhabit. Unwitting hosts of these creatures may also report candles being lit when they don't recall lighting them.
Symbiotic Pest. Wickwalks can be protective of their chosen abode, being known to defend against thieves in homes where they feel welcome. If a wickwalk sees someone as a threat, or trespasser, they rarely hesitate to send sparks flying.
However, when a wickwalk is treated as a pest it can become dangerous. Wickwalks will act out and threaten a homeowner by lighting precious possessions on fire, occasionally escalating so far as to burn down an entire home in retaliation.
