Goblin Ambush Shocks Travelers on Triboar Trail
What’s Behind Surge in Hostile Encounters?
Ches 25, Phandalin – Ambushed wagons, dead travelers, and a town looking for answers.
“I was supposed to receive a shipment of equipment last week,” says Linene Graywind, owner of Lionshield Coster in Phandalin, “These provisions are crucial to keep things running smoothly in town.”
These goblin attacks are a grim reminder of the events that occurred 500 years ago when a band of marauders destroyed the city after battling over Wave Echo Cave.
“Who’s going to stop these attacks?” said one townsfolk who asked to remain anonymous. “What is Townmaster Wester going to do to keep us safe?”

Redbrands' Reign of Terror
A group of bandits called the Redbrands have set up shop in Tresendar Manor at the edge of town.
“They’re getting bolder and shaking down local businesses,” said Freda, a gnome resident of Phandalin. “The only one they haven’t tried to hassle is Mrs. Thornton’s Miner’s Exchange. I think they’re scared of her.”
Emboldened by a lack of resistance from Townmaster Wester, the Redbrands have quickly tightened their grasp on Phandalin. “They murdered Thel–our local woodcarver,” said Toblen, the innkeeper of the Stonehill Inn. “He tried to run them off after they threatened his shop, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing.”
What’s in This Issue of the Phandalin Post?
This issue of the Phandalin Post covers the conflicts the players will face in the first two chapters of the adventure. It serves as an excellent tool to hand your players before their first session.
Goblins on Triboar Trail. The excerpt on goblin attacks should warn the party that there are dangers on the Triboar Trail, which will allow them to prepare contingencies in case they are attacked. These preparations will pay off during the "Goblin Ambush" encounter in Chapter 1.
Redbrands in Phandalin. The section detailing how the Redbrands have overrun Phandalin is a good way to establish the threat of the ruffians to your players in Chapter 2. Just in case they don’t go to Stonehill Inn, where rumors of the Redbrands are discussed by townsfolk, they can still hear that businesses are being hassled, and the Redbrands have gone so far as to murder one of the townsfolk.
These articles also make it clear that Townminster Weston hasn’t been of any help with the issues that the town is facing, so the players shouldn’t expect any formalized support with these challenges.
Get Your Adventure to Phandalin Started!
Phandalin has appeared in numerous adventures before, but Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk will introduce the beloved town to its greatest danger yet! From malevolent cults and twisted monsters to dungeon crawls and powerful magic artifacts, can your party save the town from the grave threats it faces?

Outside of writing for Arcane Eye, Mike spends most of his time playing games, hiking with his girlfriend, and tending the veritable jungle of houseplants that have invaded his house.
Fun way to introduce the town, I like this quite a bit. Bite sized but memorable.
Cool
I love little stuff like this.
Unless Phandalin has grown a whole lot since the Starter Set, it seems a little small for a newspaper.
How do I download this? My party is just about to enter Phandalin for the first time ever in a few days and I'd love to give them these.
In one hand it's cool, but in the other hand a newspaper is totally inconcistent with a medieval fantasy ambiance.
It's funny to see how D&D has almost turned into a steampunk game, I wouldn't surprised if they added trains... Oh wait, they already did.
So, the villainous Goblins and Redbrands have grown so bold that they're seeking out photo opportunities? "Get ma good side, or I'll thump ya!" growled one of the rascals to our roving reporting team before offering to email us his C.V. (ha, ha)
I cannot figure out the theme of the Forgotten Realms in 5e D&D Is it a setting with color printing presses now? Can you print spellbooks and scrolls now? Is there photography or some way of making images at a mass scale? I see newspapers and printing in a setting like Eberon or even in a part of FR like Lantan. You could just say a "wizard did it" but this doesn't seem to mesh with the feel of FR in the other sources.
This is awesome!
I want to know more about the collaborative adventure!!!
Forgotten Realms (in 5e, at least) has always been an amalgamation of genres. Phandalin, in particular, has an old west vibe as a lawless frontier town. I think a newspaper is fairly consistent with that. But let's also be real, here: this is just a freebie marketing piece for the new book. If you're not into it, don't use it.

Great piece!
These complainers clearly know not of the printing press. The medieval times were a great degradation against the advancements of society all in support of tyranny. The "Republic" was the greatest advancement of humanity 2000 years ago. Maybe you peeps should read that.
Nice read!
First, I would consider it a bit rude to refer to them as complainers. Secondly, they were speaking about the fact that there appeared to be photographs in the Phandalin Post Newspaper, not the fact that it was actually made "via print". Not trying to correct anyone, but let's not turn everything into a fight.
Love this idea!
Way more downloadable handouts please!
I‘m guessing that the tech in Abeir must have been roughly like Eberron’s, so the Lantanese Gnomes who brought back a lot of (mainly weapons) tech have also brought some printing? If the Lantanese gnomes have traded with the Sword Coast, I can see it spreading… in my game, we played Dragon Heist and there’s some Lantanese gnomes who find themselves abruptly in the city (avoiding spoilers) so I’ve used them as an excuse for the sudden emergence of so many steampunk elements, but yeah, we’re a long way from Waterdeep-as-FR-Venice here!
What? Broadsheets and newspapers are definitely in theme.
On my phone I just hold down on the image and click download. Then you should be able to print easily.
